Karl Hercula

Karl Hercula is the Vice President of Field Operations at Michigan Solar Solutions (MSS), based in Commerce, Michigan, since 2013. A NABCEP-certified photovoltaic (PV) installer since 2017, Karl has established himself as a leader in the solar energy industry. As the company’s first employee, he has been instrumental in building MSS into a thriving, customer- and employee-oriented organization. He now oversees a Field Services staff of over 25 electricians, all fully trained in safety procedures, electrical and building codes, and licensed with the State of Michigan.
Karl began his career as a roofer, working for 15 years on projects ranging from standard residential to historic slate, tile, and copper roofs. His introduction to solar energy came through a training with Uni-Solar, a thin-film solar manufacturer, which fueled his passion for renewable energy. After Uni-Solar ceased operations, and after searching for a solar company to work at with no luck, Karl pursued and obtained an associate’s degree in electronic engineering technology, deepening his understanding of electrical fundamentals while continuing to work as a roofer to support his education. This combination of technical expertise and practical experience led him to join MSS, a small start-up company which was established in 2007, in which the current owner was doing the work himself and subcontracting all the electrical. He has played a pivotal role in the company’s growth and success for over a decade now, always striving to be better.
Karl’s leadership philosophy is guided by “The Platinum Rule”—treating others how they want to be treated. He is committed to fostering a strong work/home life balance for his team and is actively working on developing an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) with the owner to show appreciation for their colleagues’ contributions. Karl prioritizes honesty and transparency with customers, ensuring they receive accurate information and realistic expectations. He stands firmly against unethical practices, particularly those that exploit vulnerable populations.
A driving force behind MSS’s industry achievements, Karl spearheaded the company’s entry into the prestigious Solar Games, where only eight teams nationwide are selected to compete. MSS secured second place in 2024 and looks forward to competing again in 2025, aiming for first place. Additionally, Karl leads MSS’s annual Earth Day initiative, during which employees are paid to participate in community clean-up efforts, demonstrating the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
Karl is driven by a personal commitment to excellence, striving to be the best in everything he does and working tirelessly to improve when he falls short. This dedication is mirrored in his artistic passion for crafting copper sculptures, utilizing materials and techniques from his roofing background. His work reflects the same attention to detail and problem-solving abilities that define his professional endeavors.
Karl teaches his team the philosophy of having the “Heart of a Lion,” encompassing principles such as honesty, trust, communication, integrity, accountability, respect, professionalism, teamwork, adaptability, initiative, diligence, passion, and delivering “the white glove treatment” to his customers. These values guide his leadership and the culture at MSS, ensuring the company’s ongoing success and reputation for excellence.
