Icons representing a four-step workflow: Learn, Assess, Evaluate, and Implement

About the Course:

This Aircraft Wire Splicing & Repair Techniques microcredential introduces Aircraft Electronics Technicians to fundamental wire preparation and splicing techniques used in aircraft electrical and electronic maintenance.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will practice stripping wire insulation, securing wires using a bench vise, applying flux, soldering conductors, and creating secure electrical connections. Learners will also explore an approved heat-shrink splice connector method, including proper wire insertion, connector positioning, and controlled heat application using a heat gun.

The course emphasizes safe tool handling, proper wire preparation, soldering technique, splice quality, insulation protection, and mechanical security. Learners will develop hands-on familiarity with two common wire splicing approaches: soldered wire splicing and heat-shrink splice connector installation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and safely handle tools used for basic wire splicing activities.
  • Properly position wires in a wire stripping tool and remove insulation without damaging the conductors.
  • Prepare multiple wires for splicing by exposing the appropriate conductor length.
  • Secure wires correctly using a bench vise during splicing activities.
  • Explain the purpose of flux during soldering.
  • Apply an appropriate amount of flux to the wire connection area.
  • Demonstrate the basic technique for creating a soldered wire splice.
  • Recognize the characteristics of a properly soldered splice, including a smooth, shiny, and mechanically secure connection.
  • Explain the purpose of heat-shrink splice connectors.
  • Position wires correctly within a heat-shrink splice connector.
  • Apply heat evenly using a heat gun to shrink and secure the connector.
  • Recognize the importance of proper wire preparation, connection quality, insulation, and environmental protection when creating wire splices.

This Aircraft Wire Splicing & Repair Techniques training is delivered through our LMS and is available as both web-based and immersive VR training.

Aircraft Wire Splicing & Repair Techniques Training for Aircraft Electronics Technicians

Aircraft electronics technician training for Boeing 737 center pedestal controls

At ImmerseLearn, we equip Aircraft Electronics Technicians with foundational hands-on skills for aircraft wire preparation and splicing. This microcredential strengthens wire stripping, conductor preparation, bench vise handling, flux application, soldering, heat-shrink connector installation, and splice inspection skills through immersive VR-based learning.

How this course strengthens workforce skills:

Wire Stripping and Wire Preparation −
Explore the proper use of a wire stripping tool to prepare conductors for splicing. Learners practice positioning different colored wires in the designated stripping area and activating the tool to remove insulation while maintaining the integrity of the conductor. The activity reinforces consistent wire preparation and proper tool handling.
Bench Vise Setup and Wire Securing +
Learn how to use a bench vise to securely hold a wire during splicing activities. Learners practice positioning the wire correctly in the highlighted area and tightening the vise to provide stable support during soldering and connector installation.
Flux Application and Soldered Wire Splicing +
Explore the basic process of creating a soldered wire splice. Learners apply a small amount of flux to the prepared wire, position the conductors together, and use a soldering iron to establish the electrical connection. The activity emphasizes applying heat appropriately and allowing solder to flow into the joint rather than simply applying solder to the iron.
Solder Joint Quality and Inspection +
Learn to recognize the characteristics of an acceptable soldered splice. Learners identify that a properly soldered connection should appear smooth and shiny while providing a mechanically secure connection. The activity reinforces the importance of proper conductor positioning, heat application, and solder flow.
Heat-Shrink Splice Connector +
Explore an alternative wire splicing method using a heat-shrink splice connector. Learners practice positioning a prepared wire within the connector, inserting the second wire into the opposite end, and maintaining the correct alignment before applying heat.
Heat Gun Application and Splice Protection +
Practice using a heat gun to evenly heat the splice connector until it fully shrinks around the joined wires. Learners develop awareness of controlled heat application and understand how the completed connector provides electrical insulation and environmental protection for the splice.
Splice Removal and Handling +
Practice safely releasing completed wire splices from the bench vise after the connection has been completed. Learners use the vise handle to release the wire, remove the finished splice, and return the tools and components to the designated work area.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop foundational knowledge and practical skills in aircraft wire splicing techniques. Learners will be able to prepare wires, remove insulation, secure conductors, apply flux, create soldered connections, and install heat-shrink splice connectors. They will also recognize the characteristics of a properly completed splice and understand the importance of electrical continuity, mechanical security, insulation, and environmental protection.
