About the Course:

This Chemical Spill Response & Cleanup Procedures microcredential introduces Surgical Technology learners to essential procedures for safely responding to chemical spills in surgical and clinical environments. Learners will practice using a chemical spill kit, maintaining hand hygiene, containing spilled materials, safely collecting broken glass, disinfecting affected surfaces, and disposing of contaminated materials appropriately.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will practice absorbing a chemical spill using appropriate cleanup materials, collecting broken glass with tweezers, disposing of sharps safely, disinfecting the affected area, removing contaminated gloves, and performing hand hygiene after completing the cleanup. The course emphasizes exposure prevention, safe waste handling, contamination control, and maintaining a safe clinical environment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the purpose of a chemical spill kit in a surgical environment.
  • Demonstrate appropriate hand hygiene before and after spill response activities.
  • Identify the materials required for chemical spill cleanup.
  • Practice safely containing and absorbing a chemical spill.
  • Demonstrate proper removal and disposal of contaminated gloves.
  • Perform hand sanitization after completing the spill cleanup.
  • Maintain safe and organized work practices during chemical spill response.

This Chemical Spill Response & Cleanup Procedures training is delivered through our LMS and is available as both web-based and immersive VR training.

Chemical Spill Response & Cleanup Procedures Training for Surgical Technologists

Surgical technologist practicing chemical spill cleanup with a spill kit and PPE

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare Surgical Technology learners with practical skills required to respond safely to chemical spills in clinical and surgical environments. This microcredential strengthens spill response, hand hygiene, contamination control, broken-glass handling, waste disposal, surface disinfection, and PPE removal through immersive VR-based learning.

Chemical Spill Kit and Preparation−
Learn about the purpose of a chemical spill kit and its role in safely containing and cleaning hazardous chemical spills. Learners practice preparing the cleanup area and maintaining appropriate hand hygiene before beginning the response.
Chemical Spill Absorption and Containment+
Practice placing a disposable waste bag and using a sponge to absorb spilled liquid from the affected area. Learners repeat the absorption process as needed and safely dispose of used sponges after the spill has been contained.
Broken Glass Collection and Disposal+
Learn to identify broken glass within the spill area and safely collect it using tweezers. Learners practice placing broken glass pieces into the designated sharps container and disposing of used cleanup tools appropriately.
Surface Disinfection and Waste Handling+
Practice using disinfectant wipes to thoroughly clean the affected surface using an S-shaped wiping pattern. Learners develop proper waste-handling practices by disposing of used wipes, packaging, and other contaminated materials in the designated waste bag.
Glove Removal and Post-Spill Hand Hygiene+
Learn proper glove removal techniques to minimize contamination and exposure during PPE removal. Learners practice disposing of used gloves appropriately and completing hand sanitization after the cleanup process.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop practical skills in chemical spill response and safe cleanup procedures. Learners will be able to prepare for a spill response, contain and absorb spilled materials, safely handle broken glass, disinfect affected surfaces, manage contaminated waste, remove gloves appropriately, and perform post-cleanup hand hygiene while supporting a safe surgical environment.

Apply PPE use, spill kit materials, and safe cleanup techniques after a chemical spill
is contained. Understand workflow principles that prevent exposure, cross-contamination, and
waste handling errors.
