Contaminated Item Preparation and Handling
About the Course:
The Contaminated Item Preparation and Handling microcredential equips learners with essential knowledge and practical skills for the safe handling, segregation, preparation, and transport of contaminated medical instruments and materials, similar to what is covered in our online sterile processing technician training program. Through immersive VR simulations, learners will practice proper workflows for managing biohazardous items, minimizing exposure risks, and ensuring compliance with infection control standards.
The course emphasizes correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe handling techniques, and adherence to sterilization and decontamination protocols to prevent cross-contamination and ensure patient and staff safety.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain the importance of proper contaminated item handling in preventing infection and ensuring workplace safety.
- Identify different types of contaminated materials and their associated risk levels.
- Differentiate between segregation, containment, transportation, and preparation processes.
- Perform step-by-step procedures for handling and preparing contaminated items using VR-based scenarios.
- Apply correct PPE usage and safety precautions during handling and transport.
- Follow infection control guidelines and regulatory standards for biohazard management.
- Recognize factors that influence contamination risks, including handling errors, improper segregation, and environmental conditions.
Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Workforce Development

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare CSTs to manage contaminated items safely and efficiently while maintaining strict infection control standards. This microcredential strengthens learners’ ability to minimize exposure risks, follow standardized protocols, and ensure compliance with healthcare regulations.
By completing this microcredential, learners will gain the skills and confidence to safely handle, prepare, and transport contaminated items in accordance with industry standards, ensuring both patient safety and healthcare worker protection.
