About the Course:

Denture Care is an essential nursing assistant skill that promotes oral hygiene, patient comfort, dignity, and overall well-being. In this microcredential, learners develop the knowledge and hands-on skills required to safely remove, clean, rinse, store, and assist patients with replacing dentures while following established infection prevention, patient safety, and oral care practices. 

Through realistic VR simulations, learners progress through the complete denture care procedure from maintaining patient privacy and verifying identity to explaining the procedure, safely removing dentures, cleaning and rinsing them, and assisting the patient with reinsertion. Throughout the experience, emphasis is placed on patient communication, dignity, comfort, infection prevention, and proper handling of dentures to prevent damage. 

The course also reinforces clinical best practices by teaching learners how to prepare the care environment, use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), protect dentures from breakage, perform proper oral care, recognize patient discomfort, and safely dispose of used supplies. By combining technical skills with compassionate patient care, learners gain confidence in providing effective denture care in a variety of healthcare settings.

Proper denture care is an important competency for Nursing Assistants and allied healthcare professionals who support patients with daily oral hygiene needs. This microcredential provides practical experience in denture handling and oral care while strengthening skills in infection prevention, patient communication, privacy and dignity, PPE use, safe patient assistance, oral hygiene, equipment handling, patient observation, and professional caregiving. 

Foundations of Denture Care −
Begin by exploring interactive 3D learning modules that introduce the importance of oral hygiene, denture care, infection prevention, patient dignity, and safe denture handling. Learners gain an understanding of the role Nursing Assistants play in supporting patients who wear dentures and learn how proper care can promote comfort, oral health, and overall quality of life.
Preparing for the Procedure +
Enter a realistic clinical environment where learners practice preparing the patient care area by maintaining privacy, performing hand hygiene, introducing themselves, verifying patient identity, and explaining the denture care procedure. Learners prepare the necessary supplies, including gloves, gauze, toothbrush, toothpaste, basin, denture solution container, towel, and water glass. The module emphasizes protecting patient privacy, maintaining confidentiality, preparing a safe work environment, and placing a towel in the sink to help prevent dentures from breaking if accidentally dropped.
Removing the Dentures +
Using immersive VR scenarios, learners practice asking the patient to open their mouth and safely removing the upper and lower dentures using appropriate techniques. Dentures are placed carefully into the designated basin while used gauze is properly discarded. Learners reinforce safe handling practices designed to prevent damage to dentures while maintaining patient comfort, communication, and dignity throughout the procedure.
Cleaning and Rinsing the Dentures +
Learners move the basin to the sink and prepare the cleaning supplies. They apply toothpaste to the toothbrush and practice cleaning each denture carefully using appropriate brushing techniques. Each denture is thoroughly rinsed under running water before being placed into the designated denture solution container. The module reinforces proper denture handling, cleaning, rinsing, storage, and protection against contamination or damage.
Assisting With Oral Care +
After the dentures have been cleaned and safely stored, learners prepare the patient for oral rinsing. A protective cloth is placed over the patient's chest, and the learner assists the patient with drinking water and rinsing their mouth. Learners position the basin appropriately so the patient can comfortably spit the water while maintaining safety, privacy, and dignity throughout the interaction.
Replacing the Dentures +
Learners retrieve the cleaned dentures using gauze and assist the patient with placing the upper and lower dentures back into the mouth. Proper handling techniques are reinforced to ensure the dentures are positioned safely and comfortably. Used gauze is disposed of appropriately, and the protective cloth is removed once oral care is complete.
Completing the Patient Encounter +
Conclude the procedure by gently wiping the patient's mouth with a clean towel, disposing of the towel in the appropriate linen hamper, and ensuring the patient is comfortable. Learners restore the care environment and complete final hygiene and cleanup procedures. The module reinforces professional behavior, patient-centered communication, privacy, dignity, comfort, and safe completion of the denture care procedure.

Upon successful completion of this microcredential, learners will be able to confidently provide safe and effective denture care while following clinical best practices for oral hygiene, infection prevention, patient safety, and comfort. They will demonstrate proficiency in patient preparation, identity verification, communication, denture removal, cleaning and rinsing, proper denture storage, oral rinsing assistance, denture replacement, PPE use, waste disposal, and post-procedure care essential for Nursing Assistants and other allied healthcare professionals.
