About the Course:

This Diagnosing and Replacing Circuit Board microcredential is part of our comprehensive HVAC Technician Program, equipping technicians to safely diagnose, remove, and replace faulty furnace control boards in gas heating systems. Learners will perform real-world diagnostic procedures including power isolation, voltage testing, and electrical verification using a multimeter. The course emphasizes proper wiring identification, safe removal practices, and accurate installation techniques to restore reliable furnace operation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify symptoms of control board failure, including lack of voltage output to furnace components
  • Safely shut down and isolate furnace power before performing diagnostics
  • Use a multimeter to measure incoming and outgoing voltage at the control board
  • Confirm control board failure through voltage testing and verification
  • Remove a faulty control board using proper sequencing and safe handling practices
  • Install and wire a replacement control board accurately
  • Verify restored power flow and furnace system operation

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Hands-on HVAC control board testing with multimeter during diagnostic training

At ImmerseLearn, we equip HVAC technicians with hands-on, job-ready skills for servicing gas heating systems. This microcredential strengthens electrical troubleshooting accuracy, safe power handling practices, and component replacement precision through immersive VR practice, included in our Online HVAC Technician Training Program.

New to HVAC fundamentals? Explore our HVAC training designed to build strong foundational knowledge and support a smooth entry into the HVAC industry.

How this course strengthens workforce skills:

Circuit Board Diagnostics
Learn how to confirm a faulty control board by verifying voltage at designated test points. Technicians practice setting the multimeter correctly, checking for expected 120V supply, and interpreting a 0-volt reading as a sign of board failure. This prevents unnecessary replacement of functional components and reduces service time.
Safe Shutdown and Testing Procedures +
Practice essential safety steps including shutting down furnace power, ensuring the door switch is disengaged, and isolating the unit before testing. Learners follow proper multimeter setup and lead placement techniques to safely check voltage at highlighted test areas.
Cause Identification +
Determine common causes of circuit board failure such as electrical surges, loose wiring connections, moisture exposure, or component burnout by analyzing test results and system response.
Replacement and Verification +
Remove the control board cover and disconnect wires methodically to prevent wiring errors. Install the new board securely, reconnect each wire in the correct terminal position, and restore power to the furnace. Learners complete the process by confirming proper voltage distribution and normal furnace operation.

By completing this microcredential, HVAC technicians will build the confidence and technical skills needed to diagnose control board failures, replace boards safely, and restore dependable furnace performance in real-world service environments.
