About the Course:

The Hazardous Drug Compounding & Safe Handling Procedures microcredential equips pharmacy technician students with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely handle, prepare, and compound hazardous medications while following established pharmacy safety protocols and regulatory compliance standards.

Learners will practice proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), hazardous drug identification, contamination control procedures, safe medication preparation, aseptic handling techniques, and waste disposal protocols while minimizing occupational exposure risks throughout the compounding process.

Through immersive VR simulations, students will engage in step-by-step hazardous drug preparation procedures including gowning and PPE application, preparing compounding materials inside controlled environments, measuring and transferring hazardous medications, maintaining contamination-free workflows, performing proper labeling and packaging, and safely disposing of contaminated materials. The simulation reinforces safety, precision, compliance, and contamination prevention at every stage of hazardous drug handling.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the risks associated with hazardous drug handling and the importance of following safety protocols in pharmacy practice.
  • Identify hazardous medications and understand workplace safety regulations related to hazardous drug compounding.
  • Demonstrate proper donning and removal of personal protective equipment (PPE) during hazardous drug preparation.
  • Apply safe aseptic handling techniques while preparing hazardous medications in controlled environments.
  • Perform accurate measuring, transferring, and compounding procedures while minimizing contamination risks.
  • Safely package, label, and store hazardous drug preparations according to pharmacy safety standards.
  • Follow proper waste disposal, decontamination, and contamination prevention procedures throughout the compounding workflow.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

At ImmerseLearn, we empower pharmacy technician students to build confidence and competency in safely managing hazardous medications in pharmacy settings. This microcredential strengthens technical precision, regulatory compliance, contamination control awareness, workplace safety practices, procedural accuracy, and safe medication handling skills essential for modern pharmacy operations.

Hazardous Drug Identification & Preparation
Practice identifying hazardous medications requiring specialized handling procedures and understand associated safety risks during preparation. Learn proper material preparation techniques, medication verification procedures, and workspace organization while maintaining compliance with pharmacy safety protocols.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Application +
Develop proper PPE handling techniques including gowning procedures, glove application, respiratory protection, face shields, and safe removal practices. Reinforce the importance of minimizing direct exposure while maintaining a contamination-controlled compounding environment throughout hazardous drug preparation activities.
Controlled Environment Compounding Procedures +
Master safe compounding procedures performed within controlled environments such as biological safety cabinets and containment workstations. Practice accurate medication measuring, transferring hazardous materials, maintaining sterile preparation areas, and preventing cross-contamination during the compounding process.
Safe Medication Handling & Transfer Techniques +
Learn proper handling procedures for transferring hazardous medications using syringes, transfer devices, vials, and specialized pharmacy equipment. Practice safe manipulation techniques while reducing aerosol generation, accidental spills, and direct occupational exposure during preparation.
Packaging, Labeling & Waste Disposal +
Safely package compounded hazardous medications using approved pharmacy containers while ensuring accurate labeling and compliance documentation. Practice proper disposal procedures for contaminated gloves, syringes, gowns, packaging materials, and hazardous pharmaceutical waste following regulated disposal standards.
Decontamination & Compliance Procedures +
Understand the importance of workspace decontamination, spill management procedures, contamination prevention, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance during hazardous drug compounding. Participate in guided VR performance reviews that reinforce pharmacy safety standards, occupational safety protocols, and proper hazardous drug management procedures.

By completing this microcredential, pharmacy technician students will gain the technical precision, safety awareness, and hazardous drug compounding proficiency required to safely prepare and handle hazardous medications while ensuring workplace safety, regulatory compliance, contamination prevention, and patient protection in professional pharmacy environments.
