Learn, assess, evaluate, and implement training process

About the Course:

This Installing a Solar Ballast System microcredential, part of the PV course series, trains technicians to safely install and secure ballast-mounted solar systems commonly used on flat and low-slope roofs without roof penetrations. Professionals who want to build a broader foundation in photovoltaic systems may also benefit from our Solar Training Program.

Learners will practice real-world installation techniques including site assessment, ballast tray placement, mounting structure assembly, ballast block installation, system alignment, load distribution verification, wind uplift considerations, and final installation inspection. The course emphasizes rooftop safety, structural stability, manufacturer compliance, and proper ballast calculations to ensure reliable PV system performance.

Technicians will gain hands-on experience in installing ballast-mounted solar systems, minimizing installation errors, ensuring proper load management, and supporting long-term system stability and energy production.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the fundamentals of ballast-mounted PV systems
  • Identify ballast system components and mounting hardware
  • Perform site and roof assessments prior to installation
  • Evaluate structural and load-bearing requirements
  • Assemble ballast mounting structures according to specifications
  • Position and secure ballast trays and blocks correctly
  • Verify wind uplift and load distribution requirements
  • Follow rooftop safety procedures during installation activities

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Workforce Development

Technician installing ballast-mounted photovoltaic mounting systems on a commercial rooftop

At ImmerseLearn, we equip solar technicians with practical installation skills required for modern PV systems. This microcredential strengthens technical accuracy, installation efficiency, structural assessment capabilities, and safety awareness through immersive VR-based learning. Technicians looking to expand these hands-on installation skills can continue their education through our advanced photovoltaic (PV) installer training program.

Ballast System Fundamentals
Learn how ballast-mounted solar systems provide secure panel support without roof penetrations. Technicians develop an understanding of ballast design principles, load distribution, and the factors influencing system stability and long-term performance.
Ballast Structure Assembly and Installation +
Practice assembling mounting frames, positioning ballast trays, and installing ballast blocks according to manufacturer specifications and project requirements. Technicians learn proper alignment, spacing, fastening, and support techniques for reliable system installation.
Safe Work Practices +
Practice essential rooftop safety procedures including fall protection, material handling, lifting techniques, tool safety, and safe movement while working with ballast system components. Emphasis is placed on preventing accidents while maintaining installation precision and quality.
Installation Verification and Compliance +
Apply inspection and verification procedures to confirm proper ballast placement, structural integrity, system alignment, and compliance with manufacturer guidelines and industry standards. Learners complete the process by validating installation readiness before PV module placement.

By completing this microcredential, technicians will gain the confidence and technical expertise needed to safely install ballast-mounted solar systems while ensuring structural stability, proper load distribution, regulatory compliance, and long-lasting photovoltaic system performance.
