About the Course:

Measuring and Recording Urine Output is an essential patient care skill for Nursing Assistants working in hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, and other healthcare settings. This microcredential introduces learners to the importance of collecting, measuring, and documenting urine output to support patient monitoring, hydration assessment, and overall care.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will practice assisting a patient with urination using a urinal, maintaining patient privacy, performing hand hygiene, applying appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), positioning the patient safely, and handling the urine collection container. The course emphasizes accurate measurement, proper documentation, infection prevention, patient dignity, and safe disposal practices.

Learners will develop practical skills in preparing the patient and environment, explaining the procedure, adjusting the bed, assisting with urinal placement, providing privacy and comfort, checking urine levels, disposing of urine and used materials, recording output, and completing post-procedure hygiene according to established healthcare facility procedures.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the importance of measuring and documenting urine output in patient care.
  • Demonstrate proper hand hygiene and appropriate PPE use before the procedure.
  • Verify patient identity, explain the procedure, and maintain patient privacy.
  • Assist the patient with urinal placement and urine collection while maintaining dignity and comfort.
  • Handle the urinal container safely and prevent spills or contamination.
  • Identify and accurately check the urine level in the collection container.
  • Follow appropriate procedures for urine disposal and cleaning or discarding used equipment.
  • Record urine output accurately at the designated workstation.
  • Remove gloves and perform hand hygiene according to facility protocols.
  • Follow infection prevention, patient safety, and documentation procedures throughout the process.

This Measuring and Recording Urine Output training is delivered through our LMS and is available as both web-based and immersive VR training.

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare Nursing Assistants with essential patient care skills required in modern healthcare environments. This microcredential develops competency in urine output monitoring, patient communication, safe positioning, infection prevention, PPE use, specimen handling awareness, accurate documentation, and professional bedside care through immersive VR-based learning.

Patient Preparation and Communication −
Learn to prepare the patient's environment by ensuring privacy, introducing yourself, confirming patient identity, and explaining the urine collection procedure. Learners practice communicating clearly, responding to patient concerns, and maintaining dignity throughout the process.
Hand Hygiene, PPE, and Safe Positioning +
Practice performing hand hygiene, putting on gloves, and preparing the patient for urine collection. Learners develop awareness of appropriate bed positioning, safe working height, privacy coverage, and maintaining a comfortable environment during bedside care.
Urinal Placement and Urine Collection +
Develop practical skills in handling the urinal container, positioning it correctly, and assisting the patient with urine collection. Learners practice providing adequate privacy, helping the patient feel at ease, and ensuring the container is handled carefully to reduce the risk of spills and contamination.
Measuring Urine Output +
Learn to inspect the collected urine and identify the measurement markings or level on the container. Learners understand the importance of checking the amount carefully and ensuring that the recorded output reflects the collected urine accurately.
Urine Disposal and Equipment Handling +
Practice handling the urinal container after collection and following the designated procedure for urine disposal. Learners reinforce appropriate waste disposal, safe handling of used materials, and maintaining a clean environment according to healthcare facility protocols.
Documentation and Procedure Completion +
Learn to record urine output at the designated workstation and complete the procedure safely. Learners practice removing gloves, disposing of them appropriately, and following hand hygiene protocols while reinforcing accurate documentation and professional patient care.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop practical knowledge and hands-on experience in measuring and documenting urine output. Learners will be able to prepare patients for urine collection, maintain privacy and comfort, assist with urinal placement, check urine levels, follow safe disposal procedures, document output accurately, and apply appropriate infection prevention practices. These competencies support safe, organized, and effective patient care in Nursing Assistant and allied health settings.
