About the Course:

The Modified Bed Bath & Personal Hygiene Care microcredential introduces Nursing Assistant learners to the procedures involved in providing partial bathing and personal hygiene care to patients who require assistance while remaining in bed. Learners will develop practical skills in maintaining patient comfort, privacy, cleanliness, and dignity during bedside bathing.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will practice preparing the environment, performing hand hygiene, applying gloves, verifying patient identity, explaining the procedure, adjusting the bed, and preparing bathing supplies. Learners will then practice checking water temperature, covering the patient with a bath blanket, cleaning the face, eyes, ears, neck, arms, and underarm areas, rinsing and drying the skin, and disposing of used materials appropriately. The course emphasizes infection prevention, patient communication, safe handling, and respectful personal care.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the purpose and importance of a modified bed bath in patient care.
  • Perform hand hygiene and apply appropriate PPE before beginning the procedure.
  • Verify patient identity and explain the bathing procedure clearly.
  • Maintain patient privacy, dignity, and comfort throughout the process.
  • Position the patient safely and use a bath blanket to maintain privacy.
  • Demonstrate appropriate techniques for cleaning the eyes, ears, face, and neck.
  • Perform bathing of the upper arm and underarm areas using appropriate washcloth techniques.
  • Rinse and dry the cleaned areas thoroughly.
  • Dispose of used bathing materials and soiled linens according to facility procedures.
  • Follow infection prevention and safe patient-handling practices throughout the procedure.

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare Nursing Assistant learners with essential personal care skills required in hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, and other healthcare settings. This microcredential strengthens bedside bathing techniques, patient communication, infection prevention, skin care awareness, equipment preparation, and professional patient handling through immersive VR-based learning.

Patient Preparation and Communication −
Learn to maintain patient privacy, introduce yourself, confirm patient identity, and explain the modified bed bath procedure. Learners practice adjusting the bed to a comfortable working height, preparing the patient, and using a bath blanket to preserve dignity throughout the procedure.
Bathing Supplies and Water Temperature +
Practice preparing the basin, towels, washcloths, soap, and other required supplies. Learners develop awareness of checking water temperature and allowing the patient to confirm comfort before beginning the bathing procedure.
Facial and Neck Hygiene +
Practice preparing a washcloth mitt and using appropriate techniques to clean the patient's eyes, ears, face, and neck. Learners reinforce gentle handling, using a clean side of the washcloth when appropriate, rinsing the skin, and drying the cleaned areas thoroughly.
Arm and Underarm Hygiene +
Develop practical skills in supporting the patient's arm while cleaning the upper arm and underarm areas. Learners practice using soapy washcloths, changing to a clean side when needed, rinsing the skin with fresh water, and drying the cleaned areas while maintaining patient comfort.
Infection Prevention and Safe Patient Care +
Learn to handle used washcloths, towels, and linens appropriately throughout the procedure. Learners reinforce hand hygiene, glove use, proper disposal of used materials, patient privacy, and adherence to established healthcare facility procedures.
Procedure Completion and Patient Comfort +
Practice maintaining appropriate patient coverage, communicating throughout the bathing process, and ensuring the patient remains comfortable. Learners develop awareness of the importance of leaving the patient clean and dry, keeping the environment organized, and following facility protocols after completing care.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop practical knowledge and simulated experience in providing a modified bed bath. Learners will be able to prepare the patient and supplies, maintain privacy, check water temperature, clean and rinse the face, neck, arm, and underarm areas, dry the skin, and dispose of used materials appropriately. These skills support safe, comfortable, and respectful personal care in Nursing Assistant and allied health settings.
