About the Course:

This Operating Room Design & Equipment Fundamentals microcredential introduces Surgical Technology learners to the layout, equipment, and functional areas commonly found within a modern operating room.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will explore essential operating room components, including ceiling air vents and lights, equipment booms, surgical lights, monitors, medical gas pendants, operating room tables, anesthesia machines, laparoscopic equipment, wall control panels, hand hygiene stations, PPE areas, and waste disposal areas. Learners will understand the purpose and placement of these components within the operating room environment.

The course emphasizes operating room organization, equipment awareness, infection prevention, patient safety, sterile field support, and efficient workflow within the surgical environment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify major areas, equipment, and fixtures within an operating room.
  • Understand the purpose of ceiling ventilation and lighting systems.
  • Identify equipment booms and their role in supporting surgical equipment.
  • Recognize ceiling-mounted surgical lights and operating room monitors.
  • Identify clinical hand hygiene stations and understand their role in infection prevention.
  • Recognize PPE storage and clinical waste disposal areas.
  • Understand how operating room design supports organization, safety, and efficient surgical workflows.

This Operating Room Design & Equipment Fundamentals training is delivered through our LMS and is available as both web-based and immersive VR training.

Operating Room Design & Equipment Fundamentals Training for Surgical Technologists

Surgical technologist learning operating room design and equipment fundamentals

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare Surgical Technology learners with practical knowledge of operating room environments and equipment. This microcredential strengthens operating room awareness, equipment identification, environmental organization, infection prevention, safety awareness, and understanding of surgical workflows through immersive VR-based learning.

Operating Room Layout and Environmental Systems−
Explore the overall operating room environment, including ceiling air vents, lighting systems, equipment booms, and ceiling-mounted monitors. Learners understand how these systems support airflow, illumination, equipment access, and an organized surgical workspace.
Surgical Equipment and Sterile Field Setup+
Identify essential equipment positioned around the sterile field, including the Mayo stand, back table, single ring stand, kick bucket, and operating room table. Learners understand the purpose and placement of each item during surgical procedures.
Anesthesia and Medical Gas Equipment+
Explore the anesthesia machine and medical gas pendant located within the operating room. Learners understand how these components support anesthesia care, ventilation, medical gas access, suction, and electrical connections.
Laparoscopic and Video Equipment+
Identify laparoscopic equipment carts, ceiling-mounted equipment booms, and mobile OR video monitor carts. Learners understand how these systems support surgical imaging, camera systems, insufflation, illumination, and visualization during minimally invasive procedures.
OR Controls, Hand Hygiene, and PPE Areas+
Explore the operating room wall control panel, clinical hand hygiene sink area, and PPE and waste disposal area. Learners recognize how these areas support equipment control, hand hygiene, PPE use, clinical organization, and safe waste disposal.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop practical knowledge of operating room design, equipment, layout, and functional areas. Learners will be able to identify essential OR equipment and environmental systems, understand their purpose and placement, and recognize how operating room design supports patient safety, infection prevention, sterile workflow, and efficient surgical procedures.

Apply PPE use, infection control practices, and proper unloading and transport techniques after cycle
completion. Understand workflow principles that prevent contamination, packaging compromise, and
handling errors.
