About the Course:

This HVAC Outdoor Unit Torch Brazing Procedures microcredential introduces HVAC associates to the fundamentals of torch brazing and its application when connecting refrigerant tubing to components in an HVAC outdoor unit. Learners will develop an understanding of the brazing equipment, materials, safety precautions, and procedures involved in creating secure, leak-resistant joints.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will explore the outdoor unit's refrigerant line connections and practice preparing copper tubing, identifying brazing materials, positioning components, applying controlled torch heat, and forming brazed joints. The course emphasizes fire safety, appropriate PPE, heat management, protection of nearby components, and following established HVAC brazing procedures.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the purpose of torch brazing in HVAC systems.
  • Identify the main components of an HVAC outdoor unit involved in refrigerant line connections.
  • Identify the torch, fuel supply, brazing rod, and other equipment used in the brazing process.
  • Demonstrate the basic sequence of heating the joint and applying brazing filler material.
  • Recognize the importance of protecting valves, wiring, insulation, and nearby components from excessive heat.
  • Identify common visible defects in brazed joints, such as incomplete filler coverage or uneven joints.
  • Understand the importance of allowing the joint to cool safely and inspecting it before proceeding.
  • Follow established workplace procedures for brazing safety and quality checks.

This Outdoor Unit Torch Brazing Procedures training is delivered through our LMS and is available as both web-based and immersive VR training.

Outdoor Unit Torch Brazing Procedures Training for HVAC Technicians

HVAC technician practicing pliers, tubing, and torch inspection

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare HVAC associates with practical skills related to torch brazing and refrigerant line connections in outdoor HVAC units. This microcredential strengthens brazing equipment identification, copper tubing preparation, heat application awareness, joint formation, fire prevention, and visual quality inspection through immersive VR-based learning.

How this course strengthens workforce skills:

Brazing Equipment and Outdoor Unit Identification −
Learn to identify the outdoor unit's refrigerant connections, copper tubing, service valves, and other nearby components relevant to the brazing process. Learners also become familiar with the torch, fuel supply, brazing rods, and supporting equipment used during the procedure.
Copper Tubing and Joint Preparation +
Explore the preparation of copper tubing and fittings before brazing. Learners practice understanding proper alignment, clean connection surfaces, secure positioning, and the importance of preparing the joint according to applicable HVAC procedures.
Torch Operation and Controlled Heat Application +
Understand the basic principles of torch brazing and how heat is applied to a copper tubing joint on an outdoor unit. Learners explore how appropriate heat distribution helps the brazing filler material flow into the joint while reducing the risk of overheating or damaging nearby components.
Brazing Joint Formation +
Practice the sequence of heating the prepared joint and applying brazing filler material. Learners develop an understanding of how the filler material flows into the connection and forms a strong, leak-resistant joint when the procedure is performed correctly.
Outdoor Unit Protection and Fire Safety +
Learn to recognize potential hazards associated with open flames and high temperatures around outdoor HVAC equipment. Learners reinforce the importance of appropriate PPE, fire prevention measures, protection of nearby components, and compliance with established safety procedures.
Joint Inspection and Quality Awareness +
Develop the ability to recognize visible signs of an acceptable brazed joint and identify potential defects, including incomplete filler coverage, uneven application, or visible damage. Learners also understand the importance of safe cooling, appropriate inspection, and completing any required quality checks before the system proceeds to subsequent work.

By completing this microcredential, HVAC associates will develop practical knowledge of the torch brazing process used for refrigerant tubing connections on HVAC outdoor units. Learners will be able to identify relevant equipment and components, understand tubing preparation and joint formation, recognize the principles of controlled heat application, apply essential fire safety practices, and identify visible brazing defects. These skills support safe, consistent, and quality-focused HVAC installation and service work.
