About the Course:

This Patient Transfer & Repositioning Techniques microcredential introduces Surgical Technology learners to the basic steps involved in transferring a patient using a transfer cloth and transfer board. Learners will explore how controlled patient rotation, appropriate placement of transfer equipment, and coordinated movement support safe patient handling in a clinical environment.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will practice rotating the patient, positioning the transfer cloth and board, sliding the board underneath the patient, moving the patient across the transfer surface, and removing the board. The course emphasizes correct procedural sequencing, equipment handling, patient positioning, controlled movement, and awareness of patient safety during transfers.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the purpose of transfer cloths and transfer boards in patient handling.
  • Recognize the importance of safe patient positioning during transfers.
  • Rotate the patient using the designated handling points.
  • Return the patient to the supine position after board placement.
  • Move the patient across the transfer surface using the demonstrated technique.
  • Follow the prescribed sequence for patient transfer activities.
  • Recognize the importance of controlled movement and patient safety throughout the procedure.

This Patient Transfer & Repositioning Techniques training is delivered through our LMS and is available as both web-based and immersive VR training.

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare Surgical Technology learners with foundational knowledge and practical skills in patient transfer techniques. This microcredential strengthens patient handling awareness, transfer equipment placement, coordinated movement, procedural sequencing, and understanding of safe patient repositioning through immersive VR-based learning.

Patient Rotation and Positioning−
Practice rotating the patient using the designated handling points. Learners will understand how patient orientation changes during the transfer process and how to return the patient to the supine position following transfer board placement.
Transfer Cloth Placement+
Learn to identify and position the transfer cloth in the designated area. Learners will develop familiarity with preparing the patient and transfer area for the subsequent steps of the procedure.
Transfer Board Placement and Insertion+
Practice picking up the transfer board, positioning it correctly, and sliding it underneath the patient. Learners will understand the role of the board in supporting the transfer process and the importance of following the demonstrated placement sequence.
Patient Movement Across the Transfer Surface+
Explore the steps involved in moving the patient toward the receiving side. Learners will practice using the designated handling points, maintaining controlled movement, and changing sides to continue the transfer procedure.
Transfer Board Removal+
Practice moving to the opposite side of the patient and removing the transfer board from underneath them. Learners will reinforce the final steps of the transfer sequence and understand the importance of completing each action in the correct order.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop foundational knowledge and simulated experience in patient transfer techniques using a transfer cloth and board. Learners will be able to perform the demonstrated sequence of patient rotation, equipment placement, board insertion, patient movement, and board removal while recognizing the importance of controlled handling, correct positioning, and patient safety in clinical environments.
