About the Course:

This Perform Preventive Maintenance microcredential trains PV technicians to perform safe, systematic, and code-compliant preventive maintenance on photovoltaic (PV) systems. Learners will practice real-world scenarios in VR, including performing startup and shutdown sequences and applying NFPA 70E lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures to ensure complete de-energization before maintenance.

The course emphasizes OSHA compliance, structured O&M practices, visual and mechanical inspections, and identification of common failure points across PV components to maintain long-term reliability and performance. These skills are reinforced through our photovoltaic operations and maintenance training.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply OSHA safety regulations and site-specific safety procedures during preventive maintenance.
  • Follow NFPA 70E standards and demonstrate proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) sequences using VR-based activities.
  • Perform safe startup and shutdown procedures through immersive VR simulations.
  • Develop O&M strategies and understand common causes of equipment degradation and failure.
  • Create and apply maintenance schedules based on manufacturer and site-specific criteria.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

PV preventive maintenance training for solar technicians

Workforce Development

Solar technician conducting PV system inspection

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare technicians to perform preventive maintenance through safe work habits, accurate inspection routines, and effective system management. This microcredential focuses on procedural excellence, preventive awareness, and safety compliance.

VR Safety and LOTO Training
Engage in fully interactive VR exercises to apply NFPA 70E-compliant lockout/tagout procedures. Practice identifying isolation points, verifying zero energy states, tagging systems, and re-energizing equipment safely.
VR Startup and Shutdown Procedures +
Simulate complete PV system startup and shutdown operations after maintenance. Follow proper energization sequences and validation steps to ensure operational safety and performance verification.
Performance Monitoring and Maintenance Planning +
Learn to interpret maintenance data, inspection records, and performance trends to plan corrective actions, schedule routine maintenance, and ensure system uptime and reliability.
Component Reliability and Condition Assessment +
Develop the ability to evaluate the mechanical and electrical condition of PV components, identify early signs of degradation, and implement corrective actions to sustain long-term reliability and performance efficiency.

By completing this microcredential, technicians will master preventive maintenance practices in PV systems—developing VR-based proficiency in lockout/tagout and startup procedures, and ensuring safe, consistent, and high-quality system operation.
