Icons representing a four-step workflow: Learn, Assess, Evaluate, and Implement

About the Course:

This Precision Measurement with Vernier and Digital Calipers microcredential trains plumbing technicians to accurately measure pipe diameters, fittings, components, and other plumbing materials using Vernier and digital calipers.

Learners will practice real-world measurement techniques including tool selection, caliper setup, jaw positioning, internal and external measurements, depth measurement, reading Vernier scales, using digital displays, and recording measurements accurately. The course emphasizes measurement precision, proper tool handling, calibration, and safe work practices to support accurate plumbing installation and maintenance.

Technicians will gain hands-on experience in taking precise measurements, minimizing measurement errors, and selecting the appropriate caliper for different plumbing applications.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify Vernier and digital caliper components and their functions
  • Safely prepare the work area and select the appropriate measuring tool
  • Properly position and handle calipers for accurate measurements
  • Measure external dimensions of pipes, fittings, and plumbing components
  • Measure internal diameters and openings accurately
  • Perform depth measurements using the depth rod or blade
  • Read and interpret Vernier scale measurements correctly
  • Apply proper zeroing and calibration techniques before measurement
  • Identify common measurement errors and apply techniques to improve accuracy
  • Maintain safe handling, storage, and care practices for precision measuring tools

Course delivered through our LMS and accessible in both VR and web. Learn on the web anytime, or enjoy immersive VR training with your own Oculus VR headset.

Workforce Development

Plumbing technician performing valve installation and pipe connection training

At ImmerseLearn, we equip plumbing technicians with the practical measurement and precision skills required for accurate residential and commercial plumbing applications. This microcredential strengthens measurement accuracy, tool-handling ability, and quality-control practices through immersive VR-based learning.

Vernier Caliper Measurement Techniques
Learn how to use Vernier calipers to measure the external and internal dimensions of pipes, fittings, valves, and other plumbing components. Technicians develop the ability to position the jaws correctly, read the Vernier scale, and obtain precise measurements for installation and maintenance tasks.
Digital Caliper Operation +
Practice using digital calipers to quickly obtain accurate dimensional measurements. Learners will work with external, internal, and depth measurements while learning proper zeroing, display interpretation, and measurement recording techniques.
Precision Measurement and Accuracy +
Understand how proper tool positioning, alignment, pressure, zeroing, and calibration affect measurement accuracy. Technicians will learn to recognize common measurement errors and apply appropriate techniques to achieve consistent and reliable results.
Measurement Application and Verification +
Apply Vernier and digital calipers to practical plumbing scenarios involving pipes, fittings, connections, and components. Learners will compare measurements, verify dimensions against required specifications, and use accurate measurements to support proper installation and system performance.

By completing this microcredential, technicians will gain the confidence and technical expertise needed to use Vernier and digital calipers accurately, perform precise plumbing measurements, reduce installation errors, and support reliable, high-quality plumbing work.
