About the Course:

The Preparation of Contaminated Items microcredential introduces learners to the essential procedures involved in preparing contaminated medical instruments and items for safe processing in the sterile processing department. Learners will explore proper handling, containment, organization, and preparation practices used to support safe instrument processing.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will practice identifying contaminated items, applying appropriate PPE, handling items safely, organizing contaminated instruments, and preparing them for the next stage of processing. The course emphasizes infection prevention, contamination control, safe handling, and adherence to established sterile processing procedures.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the importance of properly preparing contaminated items for sterile processing.
  • Identify contaminated instruments and items requiring processing.
  • Demonstrate appropriate PPE and infection prevention practices.
  • Organize contaminated items according to established procedures.
  • Recognize conditions that may increase contamination or exposure risks.
  • Maintain appropriate separation between contaminated and clean areas.
  • Demonstrate safe and organized preparation practices in the decontamination area.

This Preparation of Contaminated Items training is delivered through our LMS and is available as both web-based and immersive VR training.

Preparation of Contaminated Items Training for Sterile Processing Technicians

Endoscope inspection and infection prevention training

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare Sterile Processing Technicians with practical skills required to safely handle and prepare contaminated medical instruments for processing. This microcredential strengthens contamination control, PPE use, safe handling, item organization, infection prevention, and workplace safety through immersive VR-based learning.

Contaminated Item Identification and Preparation−
Explore common contaminated instruments and medical items received for sterile processing. Learners practice identifying items that require preparation and develop awareness of the importance of proper handling before further processing.
PPE and Infection Prevention+
Practice selecting and using appropriate PPE when working with contaminated items. Learners reinforce hand hygiene, contamination control, and infection prevention practices to reduce exposure risks during preparation activities.
Safe Handling of Contaminated Items+
Develop safe techniques for handling and moving contaminated instruments while minimizing the risk of exposure, spills, or contamination of surrounding areas. Learners practice maintaining appropriate control of contaminated items throughout the preparation process.
Organization and Containment+
Practice organizing contaminated instruments and maintaining appropriate containment before they proceed to the next stage of sterile processing. Learners develop awareness of separation between contaminated materials and clean work areas.
Preparation for Further Processing+
Learn to prepare contaminated items according to established sterile processing procedures and workflow requirements. Learners reinforce the importance of proper organization, contamination control, and safe transfer to subsequent processing stages.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop practical knowledge and hands-on experience in preparing contaminated items for sterile processing. Learners will strengthen competencies in contaminated item identification, PPE use, infection prevention, safe handling, organization, containment, and preparation for subsequent processing while supporting a safe and controlled sterile processing environment.

Apply PPE use, infection control practices, and proper unloading and transport techniques after cycle
completion. Understand workflow principles that prevent contamination, packaging compromise, and
handling errors.
