About the Course:

The Product Shortage & Recall Management in Pharmacy microcredential equips pharmacy technician students with essential knowledge and hands-on skills to effectively manage medication shortages and product recalls while ensuring patient safety and regulatory compliance.

Learners will explore standardized procedures for identifying inventory-related issues, responding to recall alerts, communicating with pharmacists, prescribers, and patients, and maintaining accurate documentation throughout the process.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will engage in real-world scenarios such as detecting low stock during inventory checks, identifying compromised medications, responding to FDA recall alerts, quarantining affected products, and coordinating substitute therapies. These simulations emphasize critical thinking, communication accuracy, and workflow adaptation in high-risk situations, making this microcredential a valuable component of a comprehensive pharmacy technician training program.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the importance of managing product shortages and recalls in maintaining patient safety and continuity of care.
  • Identify signs of product shortages, inventory discrepancies, and recalled medications within pharmacy systems.
  • Understand regulatory frameworks and reporting systems (e.g., FDA MedWatch, recall classifications, facility protocols).
  • Demonstrate proper procedures for isolating, labeling, and documenting affected or unavailable products.
  • Apply effective communication strategies with pharmacists, prescribers, and patients regarding shortages and recalls.
  • Perform accurate documentation, reporting, and system updates for compliance and traceability.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Workforce Development

Pharmacy technician handling recalled medication and updating inventory system

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare pharmacy technician students to respond efficiently and responsibly to medication shortages and recalls. This microcredential strengthens attention to detail, problem-solving, communication, and regulatory compliance skills ensuring learners can maintain safe pharmacy operations even during disruptions.

Product Shortage Management Training
Engage in VR simulations that guide learners through identifying low stock or unavailable medications during inventory checks. Students will practice logging shortages, reporting to pharmacists, isolating compromised products (e.g., temperature-sensitive medications), and initiating substitute medication workflows to prevent treatment delays.
Product Recall Response Training +
Experience step-by-step recall management, including identifying recall alerts, notifying supervisors, matching affected products using lot numbers and NDC, and quarantining medications in designated “Do Not Use” areas. Learners will understand recall classifications (Class I, II, III) and their impact on urgency and patient safety.
Communication & Coordination +
Develop skills in communicating professionally with patients regarding shortages or recalls, providing reassurance, and explaining next steps. Learners will also practice coordinating with prescribers to obtain approval for substitute medications and ensuring seamless continuity of care.
Regulatory Compliance & Reporting +
Gain knowledge of reporting systems such as FDA MedWatch and VAERS, and understand the importance of adhering to pharmacy regulations during shortages and recalls. Learn how proper documentation supports legal compliance and patient safety.
Documentation & System Updates +
Practice logging shortage incidents, recall details, patient communications, and inventory updates within pharmacy systems. Learners will ensure accurate records, including drug details, lot numbers, quantities, and status updates such as “Pending Order” or quarantine documentation.
Operational Resilience & Patient Safety +
Understand the critical role pharmacy technicians play in maintaining workflow continuity during supply disruptions and safety events. Learners will build confidence in managing high-pressure situations while prioritizing accuracy, safety, and compliance.

By completing this microcredential, pharmacy technician students will gain the practical skills and confidence to manage product shortages and recalls effectively ensuring patient safety, regulatory compliance, and uninterrupted pharmacy operations even in challenging situations. These skills are reinforced through real-world pharmacy technician training.
