About the Course:

Safe Administration of Intramuscular (IM) Injection is a fundamental clinical procedure performed by Clinical Medical Assistants in physician offices, outpatient clinics, urgent care centers, specialty practices, and other healthcare settings. In this microcredential, learners are introduced to the purpose and clinical applications of intradermal injections, including their use for tuberculosis (TB) screening and allergy testing by administering medication into the dermal layer just beneath the surface of the skin.  

Through interactive web-based learning modules, learners gain practical knowledge of preparing medications, selecting appropriate injection sites, and administering intradermal injections while following physician orders and established clinical protocols. The course emphasizes patient identification, medication verification, allergy screening, site selection, aseptic technique, correct needle angle, wheal formation, safe medication administration, and proper sharps disposal to ensure safe and effective patient care.  

Learners will also develop skills in educating patients on post-procedure care, providing follow-up instructions for TB test interpretation, documenting medication administration accurately, and communicating findings effectively with supervising healthcare providers. The course reinforces professionalism, infection prevention, patient safety, and proper injection techniques required in modern clinical practice.

Engage with interactive learning modules to practice preparing the syringe with the prescribed medication, cleansing the injection site, holding the skin taut, inserting the needle bevel up at a 10- to 15-degree angle, administering the medication slowly to produce a visible wheal, activating the needle safety device, disposing of sharps correctly, and providing appropriate post-injection care while maintaining patient comfort and safety. Learners will also understand the importance of avoiding massage or covering the injection site following administration.
