About the Course:

The Safety and Aseptic Techniques in Pharmacy microcredential equips pharmacy technician training students with essential knowledge and hands-on skills required to maintain sterility, prevent contamination, and ensure patient safety during sterile compounding activities.

Through immersive VR simulations and guided interactive learning, learners practice proper hand hygiene and laminar flow hood cleaning procedures in compliance with USP <797> and USP <800> standards. The course emphasizes correct PPE usage, aseptic technique, controlled cleaning motions, and accurate documentation of critical elements for safe sterile and hazardous drug preparation.

Learners will perform step-by-step cleaning of Horizontal Laminar Flow Workbenches (HLFW) for non-hazardous compounding and understand the cleaning workflow of Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) used for hazardous drugs. The module also reinforces proper handwashing technique as a foundational safety practice before any compounding activity.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the importance of aseptic technique in sterile compounding and patient safety
  • Identify differences between USP <797> and USP <800> environments and equipment
  • Demonstrate proper handwashing and sanitization techniques using approved clinical protocols
  • Perform correct cleaning and disinfection of laminar flow hoods using sterile supplies and approved wiping patterns
  • Apply safe handling, sequencing, and disposal of cleaning materials
  • Accurately complete documentation and cleaning checklists to maintain compliance

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Safety and aseptic techniques for pharmacy technicians with USP 797/800 compliance

Workforce Development

Pharmacy technician students practicing aseptic and sterile compounding skills

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare pharmacy technician students to perform critical sterile compounding support tasks with confidence and precision. This microcredential strengthens attention to detail, contamination control, regulatory awareness, and procedural consistency, helping learners meet real-world pharmacy standards and workplace expectations.

Aseptic Hand Hygiene Training
Learners engage in a guided VR handwashing module that reinforces proper technique, sequencing, and timing. The simulation walks learners through wetting, lathering, interlacing fingers, thumb rotation, fingertip scrubbing, rinsing, drying, sanitizing, and gloving ensuring compliance with clinical hand hygiene standards before entering sterile environments.
Laminar Flow Hood Cleaning Procedures +
Through immersive VR scenarios, learners practice cleaning Horizontal Laminar Flow Hoods and understand Biological Safety Cabinet workflows, focusing on airflow, proper PPE, correct cleaning sequence, and effective wiping techniques.
USP <797> & USP <800> Compliance +
Gain practical understanding of regulatory requirements governing sterile and hazardous drug compounding. Learners follow USP-aligned protocols for cleaning frequency, documentation, and contamination prevention to maintain compliance and patient safety.
Documentation & Checklist Verification +
Learner’s practice completing cleaning checklists, initialing tasks, and recording dates and times to reinforce accountability and traceability, an essential component of pharmacy quality assurance and regulatory compliance.
Quality, Safety & Contamination Prevention +
Understand the pharmacy technician’s role in maintaining a sterile workspace, preventing cross-contamination, and supporting safe medication preparation practices through consistent aseptic techniques.

By completing this microcredential, pharmacy technician students will gain the essential aseptic and safety skills required to support safe, compliant, and high-quality sterile compounding operations, ensuring patient safety, regulatory adherence, and professional readiness.
