Four-step competency-based learning model: Learn, Assess, Evaluate, and Implement.

About the Course:

This Solar PV Ground Fault Detection & Isolation microcredential introduces PV installers and solar technicians to identifying suspected ground faults and insulation-related issues in utility-scale solar photovoltaic systems.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will explore combiner box access, multimeter setup, DC voltage measurements, conductor-to-ground testing, and string-level fault investigation. Learners will practice interpreting measurement readings, identifying abnormal voltage conditions, locating damaged wiring, replacing a damaged conductor, and reviewing test results to understand whether corrective actions have addressed the suspected fault.

The course emphasizes electrical fault identification, measurement interpretation, conductor insulation awareness, safe isolation practices, damaged wire identification, and verification of corrective actions. Learners will also understand the importance of using appropriately rated test equipment, following approved electrical safety procedures, and documenting findings before equipment is returned to service.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the importance of identifying ground faults in solar PV systems.
  • Identify the major components and access points of a solar combiner box.
  • Recognize the purpose of red and black multimeter test leads.
  • Understand the importance of selecting appropriately rated electrical test equipment.
  • Interpret DC voltage readings during initial fault investigation.
  • Recognize the purpose of replacing damaged conductors with suitable replacement wiring.
  • Understand the importance of post-repair verification and checking acceptance criteria.
  • Follow approved safety procedures and document test findings before returning equipment to service.

This Solar PV Ground Fault Detection & Isolation training is delivered through our LMS and is available as both web-based and immersive VR training.

Solar PV Ground Fault Detection & Isolation Training for PV Technicians

Solar technician training for SCADA plant monitoring and performance analysis

At ImmerseLearn, we equip PV installers and solar technicians with practical knowledge of electrical fault identification and insulation-related fault investigation in solar PV systems. This microcredential strengthens multimeter familiarization, voltage measurement interpretation, ground fault awareness, damaged conductor identification, safe isolation practices, and corrective action verification through immersive VR-based learning.

Combiner Box Access and Test Equipment Preparation −
Explore the solar combiner box and become familiar with its designated access points. Learners practice opening the combiner box and positioning the red and black multimeter test leads. The module reinforces equipment familiarization and the importance of using appropriately rated instruments for electrical testing.
Initial DC Voltage Measurement and Fault Investigation +
Practice using a multimeter to observe DC voltage readings during the initial investigation. Learners examine a reading of approximately 1,300 V DC and understand how unusual measurement conditions may indicate a potential insulation-related issue. The module emphasizes that a voltage reading alone does not confirm the presence or location of a ground fault.
Conductor Disconnection and Voltage Assessment +
Explore the designated conductor disconnection and measurement activities demonstrated in the simulation. Learners review voltage readings after the specified test configuration changes and understand why comparing measurement results is important when investigating suspected electrical faults.
Positive-to-Ground and String-Level Testing +
Practice reviewing positive-to-ground voltage readings and identifying changes in measured values. Learners also explore individual string measurements, including positive-to-negative, positive-to-ground, and negative-to-ground voltage checks. The module develops awareness of how voltage comparisons can help identify a string requiring further investigation.
Damaged Conductor Identification and Replacement +
Learn to recognize visible insulation damage, including cuts in electrical wiring. Learners practice identifying the damaged conductor and understanding the replacement process using a suitable new wire. Emphasis is placed on approved isolation procedures and verifying that the equipment is safe before handling electrical conductors.
Post-Repair Verification and Electrical Safety +
Understand the importance of reviewing test results after corrective actions and checking whether the identified issue has been addressed. Learners reinforce the importance of following approved electrical safety procedures, checking applicable acceptance criteria, documenting findings, and ensuring equipment is safe before returning it to service.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop foundational knowledge and simulated experience in ground fault investigation and insulation-related fault isolation in solar PV systems. Learners will be able to prepare for designated electrical measurements, interpret DC voltage readings, compare conductor-to-ground measurements, identify visible wiring damage, understand safe conductor replacement practices, and recognize the importance of post-repair verification. These competencies support systematic electrical fault investigation and safer maintenance practices in utility-scale solar installations.
