About the Course:

The Spirometry Testing microcredential introduces learners to the principles, equipment, and clinical workflow involved in performing spirometry assessments in outpatient and clinical settings. Through immersive VR simulations, learners gain hands-on practice in patient preparation, device setup, proper testing technique, and post-procedure protocols as part of our clinical medical assistant course. The course emphasizes patient communication, accurate testing, infection control, and reliable documentation critical skills for supporting respiratory assessment and monitoring conditions such as asthma and other pulmonary disorders.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the purpose of spirometry and its role in assessing lung function.
  • Identify spirometry equipment components and their proper use.
  • Demonstrate correct steps for preparing the patient and conducting spirometry testing.
  • Apply infection control and patient safety measures before, during, and after testing.
  • Accurately observe, record, and document spirometry readings and patient responses.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Workforce Development

Master Spirometry Testing with infection control and accurate clinical documentation

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare CMA learners with practical, job-ready skills through our clinical medical assistant program required in modern healthcare environments. This microcredential strengthens respiratory assessment support skills, ensuring learners are confident in assisting clinicians with pulmonary function testing and patient care.

Spirometry Equipment & Purpose Orientation
Explore detailed 3D models of the spirometer, mouthpiece, and nose clip to understand how airflow and lung volume are measured and how spirometry supports respiratory diagnosis and monitoring.
Patient Preparation & Communication +
Practice approaching the patient professionally—confirming identity, explaining the procedure clearly, and setting expectations by informing the patient that multiple readings are required for accuracy. Learners reinforce the importance of patient comfort, posture, and cooperation for reliable results.
Performing Spirometry Testing +
Engage in guided VR scenarios to practice the complete spirometry workflow, including infection control, equipment setup, proper patient positioning, clear breathing instructions, observation of airflow graphs, and repeating the test to ensure accurate results.
Infection Control & Safety Protocols +
Understand the critical role of hygiene and safety by practicing proper disposal of used mouthpieces, equipment handling, and hand sanitization before and after the procedure to prevent cross-contamination.
Documentation & Clinical Awareness +
Develop skills in recording spirometry results, noting patient effort and cooperation, and ensuring accurate documentation within patient records to support clinical decision-making.

By completing this microcredential, learners will gain a comprehensive understanding of spirometry testing, including patient interaction, equipment handling, testing technique, safety protocols, and documentation. Graduates will be well-prepared to assist healthcare professionals in performing accurate and safe pulmonary function assessments in clinical settings.
