About the Course:

This Surgical Draping & Sterile Field Preparation microcredential introduces Surgical Technology learners to the principles and procedures of applying surgical drapes to establish and maintain a sterile field around the operative site. Learners will develop an understanding of drape placement, coverage, and the importance of maintaining sterility during surgical preparation.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will practice placing surgical drapes on the patient's left and right sides, positioning drapes above and below the procedure site, securing a surgical drape sheet to an IV pole, and spreading the sheet evenly over the patient while keeping the operative site exposed. The course emphasizes proper drape placement, sterile field maintenance, contamination prevention, and careful handling of surgical draping materials.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the purpose of surgical draping in preparing for a surgical procedure.
  • Understand the importance of establishing and maintaining a sterile field.
  • Identify the appropriate placement areas for surgical drapes around the operative site.
  • Handle surgical draping materials carefully to minimize contamination.
  • Secure a surgical drape sheet to an IV pole using the designated attachment point.
  • Maintain appropriate exposure of the operative site during draping.
  • Follow established surgical protocols during the draping procedure.

This Surgical Draping & Sterile Field Preparation training is delivered through our LMS and is available as both web-based and immersive VR training.

Surgical patient positioning and safety training for surgical technologists

Surgical Draping & Sterile Field Preparation Training for Surgical Technologists

Surgical technologist practicing safe patient positioning on the operating table

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare Surgical Technology learners with foundational skills in surgical draping and sterile field preparation. This microcredential strengthens drape handling, placement accuracy, patient coverage, sterile field awareness, and contamination prevention through immersive VR-based learning.

Surgical Drape Identification and Handling−
Learn the purpose of surgical drapes and their role in preparing the patient for a surgical procedure. Learners practice handling draping materials carefully and understanding the importance of maintaining sterility throughout the process.
Side Draping and Patient Coverage+
Practice positioning surgical drapes over the patient's left and right sides according to the designated placement areas. Learners develop an understanding of proper drape positioning to support patient coverage and sterile field preparation.
Draping Above and Below the Operative Site+
Learn to place surgical drapes above and below the procedure site. Learners practice arranging the drapes to establish the designated sterile area while keeping the operative site appropriately exposed.
Surgical Drape Sheet Positioning+
Practice securing the surgical drape sheet to the designated area of an IV pole. Learners develop skills in positioning and spreading the sheet evenly over the patient while maintaining appropriate coverage.
Sterile Field Maintenance and Contamination Prevention+
Develop awareness of the importance of proper drape placement and careful handling during surgical preparation. Learners reinforce the need to maintain sterile field integrity, avoid unnecessary disruption of the drapes, and follow established surgical protocols.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop practical knowledge and simulated experience in surgical draping techniques. Learners will be able to position drapes around the operative site, arrange patient coverage, secure and spread a surgical drape sheet, and maintain appropriate exposure of the procedure site. These skills support sterile field preparation and contamination prevention in surgical environments.
