About the Course:

This Surgical Gowning, Gloving & PPE Removal microcredential introduces Surgical Technology learners to the proper techniques for putting on and removing a surgical gown and gloves while maintaining infection prevention and contamination control in surgical environments.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will practice unfolding and wearing a surgical gown, securing the neck and waist ties, applying gloves over the gown cuffs, and safely removing contaminated PPE. The course emphasizes appropriate PPE application, safe removal techniques, waste disposal, and hand hygiene when leaving the surgical area.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the importance of proper gowning and gloving in surgical environments.
  • Identify the purpose of surgical gowns and gloves as protective barriers.
  • Demonstrate the proper technique for unfolding and putting on a surgical gown.
  • Recognize the importance of maintaining contamination control during PPE application.
  • Demonstrate safe removal of a surgical gown while turning the contaminated surface inward.
  • Perform hand hygiene after removing PPE.
  • Follow established infection prevention procedures when exiting the surgical area.

This Surgical Gowning, Gloving & PPE Removal training is delivered through our LMS and is available as both web-based and immersive VR training.

Surgical Gowning, Gloving & PPE Removal Training for Surgical Technologists

Surgical technologist practicing surgical attire and OR preparation with PPE

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare Surgical Technology learners with essential skills required for safe PPE application and removal in surgical environments. This microcredential strengthens gowning and gloving techniques, contamination prevention, protective barrier management, safe PPE removal, waste disposal, and hand hygiene through immersive VR-based learning.

Surgical Gown Preparation and Application−
Learn how to unfold a surgical gown and put it on correctly. Learners practice positioning their arms within the sleeves and securing the gown at the neck and waist while maintaining appropriate handling techniques.
Glove Application and Protective Barrier Coverage+
Practice putting on gloves and pulling them over the gown cuffs to cover the gown sleeves. Learners understand the importance of appropriate gown and glove positioning in maintaining a protective barrier during surgical activities.
Safe Surgical Gown Removal+
Learn to remove a used gown by grasping it at the shoulders, pulling it away from the body, and turning it inside out so the contaminated outer surface is folded inward. Learners practice disposing of the gown in the designated waste container.
Glove Removal and Waste Disposal+
Practice removing gloves using the appropriate technique to minimize contact with contaminated surfaces. Learners remove both gloves safely and dispose of them in the designated waste container.
Post-Removal Hand Hygiene+
Learn the importance of performing hand hygiene after removing PPE. Learners reinforce the final step of the procedure by following facility infection prevention protocols before leaving the surgical area.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop practical skills in surgical gowning, gloving, and safe PPE removal. Learners will be able to put on a surgical gown, apply gloves over the gown cuffs, remove used PPE while minimizing contamination risks, dispose of contaminated materials appropriately, and perform hand hygiene to support infection prevention and patient safety.

Apply scrubs, head and face protection, shoe covers, and sterile gloves in the correct order before
entering the operating room. Understand attire practices that prevent contamination, cross-contamination, and
infection control errors.
