About the Course:

This Surgical Patient Preparation Techniques microcredential introduces Surgical Technology learners to the basic steps involved in preparing a patient's surgical site before a procedure. Learners will explore the importance of proper hygiene, protective glove use, preparation of the working area, and antiseptic skin preparation.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will practice dispensing hand sanitizer, wearing gloves, positioning preparation cloths, opening and preparing Betadine solution, and applying the antiseptic around the patient's umbilical area. Learners will also practice using applicators, wet sponges, and dry cloths to clean and prepare the designated area, followed by appropriate disposal of used materials.

The course emphasizes preparation sequencing, appropriate handling of antiseptic solutions, skin preparation techniques, infection prevention awareness, and proper disposal of used supplies in the surgical environment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the importance of proper patient preparation before surgical procedures.
  • Position preparation cloths on both sides of the patient.
  • Apply Betadine around the patient's umbilical area using the demonstrated technique.
  • Use wet sponges to clean the designated preparation area.
  • Use a sponge with a stick to complete the designated cleaning step.
  • Dispose of used applicators, sponges, and cloths appropriately.
  • Follow the prescribed sequence for patient preparation activities.

This Surgical Patient Preparation Techniques training is delivered through our LMS and is available as both web-based and immersive VR training.

Surgical Patient Preparation Techniques Training for Surgical Technologists

Surgical technology training for safe patient transfer and repositioning

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare Surgical Technology learners with foundational knowledge and practical skills in surgical patient preparation. This microcredential strengthens preparation techniques, glove use, antiseptic handling, skin preparation awareness, equipment handling, procedural sequencing, and proper disposal practices through immersive VR-based learning.

Hand Hygiene and Glove Application−
Practice dispensing hand sanitizer and applying gloves to clean, dry hands. Learners develop awareness of the importance of hand hygiene and appropriate protective practices before beginning patient preparation.
Patient Area Preparation+
Learn to position preparation cloths on the left and right sides of the patient. Learners practice organizing the designated preparation area and preparing the patient for the subsequent skin preparation steps.
Betadine Preparation and Handling+
Practice opening the Betadine bottle and pouring the solution into the designated container. Learners repeat the preparation process as demonstrated and develop familiarity with handling antiseptic solutions during surgical site preparation.
Antiseptic Application Around the Umbilical Area+
Develop practical skills in selecting an applicator, dipping it into the Betadine solution, and gently applying the solution around the patient's umbilicus. Learners reinforce controlled applicator handling and the importance of following the demonstrated preparation technique.
Skin Cleaning and Drying+
Practice using wet sponges to gently clean the prepared area, followed by a dry cloth to remove the Betadine as demonstrated. Learners also practice using a sponge attached to a stick to complete the designated cleaning step.
Waste Disposal and Procedural Sequencing+
Learn to dispose of used applicators, sponges, and cloths in the designated waste bin. Learners reinforce the importance of maintaining an organized preparation area, handling used materials appropriately, and completing each

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop foundational knowledge and simulated experience in surgical patient preparation. Learners will be able to perform hand hygiene, apply gloves, position preparation cloths, prepare and apply Betadine solution, clean the designated patient area using appropriate supplies, and dispose of used materials correctly. These competencies support organized patient preparation and infection prevention awareness in the surgical environment.
