About the Course:

The Urinalysis & Specimen Handling microcredential introduces learners to the core procedures in collecting, processing, and analyzing urine specimens as part of our clinical medical assistant training program. Through immersive VR simulations and interactive modules, learners gain hands-on experience with proper collection techniques, labeling, storage, and preparation for point-of-care urinalysis. The course emphasizes accuracy, contamination prevention, and strict adherence to clinical safety and quality standards critical for producing reliable diagnostic results and ensuring patient safety.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the key components, equipment, and workflow involved in urinalysis.
  • Understand proper protocols for urine specimen collection, labeling, transportation, and storage.
  • Demonstrate accurate execution of routine urinalysis procedures, including physical, chemical, and microscopic examination steps (as simulated).
  • Apply infection control, PPE requirements, and safe handling of biohazardous materials.
  • Accurately document urinalysis findings and communicate results in accordance with clinical protocols.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Workforce Development

Clinical medical assistant following urinalysis safety standards in a laboratory training setting

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare Medical Assistants through our medical assistant training to perform essential laboratory support tasks with precision and confidence. This microcredential builds foundational skills in specimen management and diagnostic testing, reinforcing the accuracy and professionalism needed to support healthcare teams in delivering high-quality patient care.

Laboratory Environment Orientation
Explore the virtual clinical laboratory to understand the urinalysis station layout, specimen collection area, PPE requirements, and workflow. Gain insight into how maintaining a clean, organized, and compliant environment ensures safe and reliable testing.
Specimen Collection and Handling +
Learn step-by-step procedures for collecting clean-catch, timed, and random urine specimens. Master proper labeling, chain-of-custody procedures, contamination prevention, and safe specimen transportation to the testing area.
Performing Routine Urinalysis Tests +
Participate in immersive VR simulations that guide learners through physical observation, reagent strip (dipstick) testing, and preparation steps for microscopic analysis. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, timing, and technique to ensure dependable test results.
Infection Control and Safety Standards +
Understand the essential role of standard precautions, PPE, aseptic technique, and biohazard waste management in preventing cross-contamination and maintaining a safe laboratory environment.
Quality Assurance and Documentation +
Gain experience in proper data recording, result interpretation, and documentation practices that support quality control and compliance with healthcare and laboratory standards.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop a comprehensive understanding of urine specimen collection, handling protocols, and routine urinalysis procedures. This foundational knowledge equips learners to effectively support diagnostic processes and uphold patient safety as part of a clinical care team.
