Four-step competency-based learning model: Learn, Assess, Evaluate, and Implement.

About the Course:

This Utility-Scale Solar Plant Safety & System Architecture microcredential introduces PV installers and solar technicians to essential workplace safety practices, pre-installation equipment, and the major components of a utility-scale solar power plant.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will practice identifying and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hard hats, hearing protection, safety footwear, and gloves. They will also explore common installation tools, including torque wrenches, leverage bars, levels, rivet tools, and impact drivers, while developing an understanding of their purposes and applications.

The course also introduces the architecture of a utility-scale solar plant, covering photovoltaic modules, single-axis trackers, weather stations, string combiner boxes, central inverters, transformers, isolation arrangements, battery banks, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), auxiliary AC distribution boards, remote terminal units (RTUs), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. Learners will understand how these components contribute to solar energy generation, electrical conversion, power distribution, monitoring, and system support.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify common safety hazards and essential safety practices in utility-scale solar plant environments.
  • Demonstrate the correct wearing of safety glasses, hard hats, hearing protection, safety footwear, and gloves.
  • Identify the major components of a utility-scale solar plant and understand their functions.
  • Understand how single-axis trackers and weather stations support solar plant performance.
  • Explain the roles of transformers and isolation arrangements in electrical power distribution.
  • Identify the functions of battery banks, UPS systems, and auxiliary AC distribution boards.
  • Explain how monitoring and control systems support utility-scale solar plant operations.
  • Recognize the importance of following established safety procedures and equipment guidelines.

Utility-Scale Solar Plant Safety & System Architecture Training for PV Technicians

PV technician reviewing solar plant components and safety practices

At ImmerseLearn, we equip PV installers and solar technicians with foundational safety knowledge, tool familiarity, and system architecture awareness required for utility-scale solar projects. This microcredential strengthens PPE recognition, pre-installation tool identification, component awareness, electrical system understanding, and familiarity with plant monitoring infrastructure through web-based and immersive VR learning.

Pre-Installation Safety and PPE −
Learn the purpose of essential PPE used in solar installation environments. Learners practice wearing safety glasses, hard hats, hearing protection, safety footwear, and gloves while understanding how these items help protect against common workplace hazards.
Solar Installation Tools and Equipment +
Explore common tools used during solar installation activities, including torque wrenches, leverage bars, levels, rivet tools, and impact drivers. Learners practice identifying and inspecting these tools to understand their basic functions and applications during installation work.
Photovoltaic Modules, Trackers, and Weather Monitoring +
Explore how photovoltaic modules convert sunlight into DC electricity and how multiple modules form strings within a solar array. Learners also discover how single-axis trackers adjust module orientation to follow the sun and how weather stations measure environmental conditions that influence energy production.
DC Collection and Power Conversion +
Learn how string combiner boxes collect DC outputs from multiple photovoltaic strings and how central inverters convert DC electricity into AC electricity. Learners develop an understanding of the relationship between these components and their role in moving generated power toward the plant's electrical collection system.
Electrical Distribution and Auxiliary Power Systems +
Explore how transformers adjust AC voltage for power transfer and how isolation arrangements provide designated switching and isolation functions. Learners also identify battery banks, UPS systems, and auxiliary AC distribution boards and understand their roles in supporting designated control, monitoring, and protection equipment.
Plant Communication, Monitoring, and SCADA +
Learn how remote terminal units collect equipment status information and operating measurements for communication to the SCADA system. Learners explore how SCADA presents equipment status, alarms, operating measurements, and historical data to support plant monitoring and operational decision-making.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop foundational knowledge of pre-installation safety, PPE, solar installation tools, and utility-scale solar plant architecture. Learners will be able to identify essential protective equipment and tools, explain the functions of major solar plant components, and understand how energy generation, conversion, distribution, auxiliary power, and monitoring systems work together. These skills support safer work practices and improved technical awareness in utility-scale solar environments.
