About the Course:

This Aircraft Hangar Hazard Recognition & Safety microcredential trains Aircraft Electronics Technicians to identify common safety hazards in aircraft hangar and maintenance environments and take appropriate actions to control or report them. 

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will identify hazards such as fluid spills, missing wheel chocks, unstable maintenance ladders, unprotected open aircraft access panels, blocked fire extinguishers, and active fires. Learners will practice placing appropriate warning notices, updating safety reports, securing aircraft with wheel chocks, establishing warning zones, clearing access to emergency equipment, and responding to a hangar fire using a fire extinguisher. 

The course emphasizes hazard recognition, immediate risk control, safety reporting, aircraft ground safety, emergency preparedness, and safe workplace practices.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify common hazards in aircraft hangar and maintenance environments. 
  • Recognize oil or fluid spills and identify appropriate hazard warnings.  
  • Understand the importance of controlling access around hazardous areas. 
  • Identify aircraft with missing wheel chocks and understand the associated ground-movement hazard. 
  • Properly position wheel chocks around aircraft wheels. 
  • Recognize unstable or damaged maintenance ladders and prevent their use. 
  • Use appropriate warning notices to identify unsafe equipment. 
  • Identify blocked or inaccessible emergency fire equipment. 
  • Recognize a hangar fire and respond using appropriate emergency procedures. 
  • Demonstrate basic fire extinguisher handling and application. 
  • Document and report identified safety hazards using available reporting systems.

Practice identifying common hangar hazards, including oil or fluid spills. Learners develop awareness of immediate risks and practice placing a DANGER FLAMMABLE LIQUID notice to clearly identify hazardous areas.
Aircraft Ground Safety +
Identify aircraft with missing wheel chocks and understand the importance of preventing unintended aircraft movement. Learners practice correctly positioning wheel chocks in front of aircraft wheels and documenting the safety condition.
Maintenance Equipment and Access Hazards +
Recognize unsafe maintenance equipment, such as an unstable ladder with a missing wheel. Learners practice placing a DO NOT USE notice to prevent use of hazardous equipment.
Open Aircraft Maintenance Area Hazards +
Identify open engine access panels and other maintenance areas that lack appropriate warnings or barriers. Learners practice establishing a warning zone around the open maintenance area to alert personnel to the hazard.
Fire Safety and Emergency Response +
Recognize fire hazards and identify blocked access to fire extinguishers. Learners practice clearing access to emergency equipment and using a fire extinguisher by removing the pin, positioning the nozzle at the base of the fire, applying the extinguishing agent, and sweeping across the fire until it is extinguished.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop practical skills in aircraft hangar hazard recognition, safety reporting, and emergency response. Learners will be able to identify common aircraft and hangar hazards, apply appropriate warning and control measures, secure aircraft against unintended movement, maintain access to emergency equipment, and respond appropriately to basic fire emergencies.
