Icons representing a four-step workflow: Learn, Assess, Evaluate, and Implement

About the Course:

This Aircraft Systems & Overhead Panel Familiarization microcredential introduces Aircraft Electronics Technicians to the major aircraft systems, controls, indicators, and test switches located on a Boeing 737 overhead panel. Learners will develop an understanding of the purpose and basic functions of these systems and how their indications support aircraft monitoring, communication, navigation, safety, and emergency preparedness.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will explore the Inertial Reference System (IRS), audio control panel, Electronic Engine Control (EEC), crew and passenger oxygen systems, flight recorder controls, airspeed and stall warning test panels, landing gear position indicators, leading-edge devices indicators, and Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT). Learners will interact with selected switches, observe system indications, and identify normal display states and test responses. The course emphasizes overhead panel recognition, system awareness, indicator interpretation, and familiarity with essential aircraft systems to support effective maintenance learning and safe aircraft operations.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify major aircraft systems and controls located on the Boeing 737 overhead panel.
  • Explain the basic function of the Inertial Reference System (IRS) and its display unit.
  • Identify the left and right IRS mode selectors and understand the purpose of the NAV alignment process.
  • Explain the function of the Audio Control Panel and its microphone selection indications.
  • Describe the role of Electronic Engine Control (EEC) systems in managing engine operating parameters.
  • Identify crew oxygen system components, including the oxygen pressure gauge and pressure reference chart.
  • Identify the flight recorder control panel and distinguish between NORMAL and TEST settings.
  • Recognize the airspeed or Mach warning test switches and understand their purpose.
  • Interpret landing gear position indicators and identify the meaning of green down-and-locked indications.
  • Explain the purpose of the Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) and recognize its indicator light.
  • Observe IRS display indications following alignment and distinguish a normal readout from a full-segment test pattern.

This Aircraft Systems & Overhead Panel Familiarization training is delivered through our LMS and is available as both web-based and immersive VR training.

At ImmerseLearn, we equip Aircraft Electronics Technicians with foundational knowledge of aircraft systems and overhead panel functions through immersive VR-based learning. This microcredential strengthens aircraft system recognition, control identification, indicator interpretation, basic test-system awareness, and understanding of communication, navigation, engine control, warning, landing gear, and emergency systems.

How this course strengthens workforce skills:

Inertial Reference System and Navigation Displays −
Explore the IRS mode selector panel and the IRS display unit to understand their roles in providing aircraft position, heading, track, ground speed, wind, and other reference information. Learners will interact with the left and right IRS selectors, observe ALIGN indications, and examine the display following alignment. The module highlights the importance of completing alignment before the system provides navigation and attitude reference data.
Audio Control and Electronic Engine Control +
Identify the Audio Control Panel and learn how it supports the selection of radio, interphone, communication, and navigation audio sources. Learners will also explore the Electronic Engine Control switches and associated engine indications to understand how the independent EEC systems support engine thrust management and monitoring of operating parameters.
Crew and Passenger Oxygen Systems +
Explore the crew oxygen mask, oxygen pressure gauge, and pressure reference chart. Learners will understand how the pressure indication is checked against the applicable reference chart to assess oxygen availability for the flight crew. The module also introduces the passenger oxygen control switch and the difference between its NORMAL and ON settings.
Flight Recorder and Warning Systems +
Identify the flight recorder control panel and understand the purpose of its NORMAL and TEST settings. Learners will also interact with the airspeed or Mach warning test switches and stall warning test panel, observing the associated warning indications and stick shaker responses. These activities introduce the purpose of built-in warning-system tests and the indications used to confirm system response.
Landing Gear and Leading-Edge Devices Indicators +
Explore the landing gear position indicators for the left main, right main, and nose landing gear. Learners will interpret the green down-and-locked indications and identify the Leading Edge Devices Indicator Panel. They will also interact with the LE DEVICES TEST switch and observe the annunciator lights illuminate to demonstrate the panel's indicator-light test function.
Emergency Locator Transmitter and System Indications +
Identify the Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) control switch and indicator light. Learners will understand the basic purpose of the ARM and ON settings and how the ELT supports aircraft location during an emergency. The module also introduces the significance of the ELT indicator and reinforces observation of system indications during familiarization activities.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop foundational knowledge of Boeing 737 aircraft systems and overhead panel components. Learners will be able to identify major controls and indicators, explain their basic functions, recognize selected test responses, interpret key system indications, and understand the purpose of essential navigation, communication, engine control, oxygen, warning, landing gear, and emergency systems. These skills provide a foundation for further aircraft electronics training and maintenance familiarization.
