About the Course:

The Basic Life Support for Pharmacy Technicians: Adult and Infant course equips pharmacy technicians with essential, life-saving skills to respond confidently during medical emergencies in pharmacy and healthcare settings. This course focuses on recognizing cardiac and respiratory emergencies and performing timely, appropriate BLS interventions for both adults and infants.

Through interactive learning modules and realistic simulations, learners will practice high-quality CPR, use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), airway management, and choking response techniques. Emphasis is placed on patient safety, teamwork, and the pharmacy technician’s role in supporting emergency response until advanced medical care arrives. Pharmacy technicians developing emergency response skills through this training can further advance their career by enrolling in our Pharmacy Technician Program.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the principles of Basic Life Support and the pharmacy technician’s role during medical emergencies.
  • Recognize signs of cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, and choking in adults and infants.
  • Demonstrate correct CPR techniques for adults and infants according to current BLS guidelines.
  • Perform proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in adult and pediatric scenarios.
  • Apply appropriate airway management and rescue breathing techniques for adults and infants.
  • Respond effectively to emergency situations by activating emergency medical services and supporting patient safety until help arrives.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Workforce Development

Pharmacy technician students building medication safety skills training course

At ImmerseLearn, pharmacy technician students build confidence, composure, and precision for emergency response. This microcredential strengthens critical thinking, coordination, timing accuracy, communication, and adherence to healthcare safety protocols preparing learners to act quickly and effectively in real-world pharmacy settings.

Adult CPR Simulation +
Learners assess responsiveness and check the carotid pulse for five seconds. If no pulse or breathing is detected, they begin CPR with 30 high-quality chest compressions at the correct rate and depth. After compressions, students open the airway and deliver two controlled rescue breaths using a CPR mask and bag-valve device, then immediately resume compressions if needed.
Infant CPR and AED Simulation +
Students perform two-finger chest compressions, followed by gentle rescue breaths with proper airway positioning. The simulation includes correct AED pad placement on the chest and back, continuing CPR cycles while following device prompts and reassessment guidelines.
Quality Assurance and Compliance +
The course reinforces scene safety, proper compression technique, effective ventilation, accurate AED placement, and structured emergency response procedures. Real-time VR feedback strengthens timing, precision, and compliance with Basic Life Support standards.

By completing this microcredential, pharmacy technician students gain the practical skills and confidence needed to respond effectively to adult and infant cardiac emergencies in healthcare environments. This microcredential complements our Online Pharmacy Technician Certification Program, building industry-ready clinical and medication safety skills.
