About the Course:

The Capillary Puncture microcredential introduces learners to the principles and procedures of capillary blood collection used in clinical settings. Through immersive VR simulations, learners gain hands-on experience in performing fingerstick and heelstick techniques, handling specimens, and ensuring patient comfort and safety. The course emphasizes proper site selection, infection control, accurate sample collection, and documentation critical skills for medical assistants involved in point-of-care testing and diagnostic procedures. This microcredential is part of our comprehensive clinical medical assistant program, where learners build full diagnostic and patient care skills.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the purpose and indications for capillary puncture.
  • Identify appropriate sites for capillary blood collection in adults, children, and infants.
  • Demonstrate proper techniques for performing fingerstick and heelstick procedures.
  • Apply infection control and safety protocols during specimen collection.
  • Accurately label, handle, and document collected samples.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Handling capillary blood samples in clinical medical assistant training

Workforce Development

Medical assistant performing heelstick blood collection during training

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare healthcare learners with essential clinical skills required for diagnostic support roles. This microcredential builds competency in capillary blood collection, patient interaction, and adherence to safety protocols in real-world healthcare environments.

Capillary Puncture Fundamentals
Explore 3D visualizations of skin anatomy and capillary networks to understand proper puncture techniques, depth, and site selection for effective blood collection.
Procedures & Techniques +
Learn step-by-step methods for performing fingerstick and heelstick procedures, including preparing the site, using lancets, collecting samples, and minimizing patient discomfort.
Specimen Collection & Handling +
Gain hands-on experience in collecting capillary blood samples using microcollection devices, ensuring correct order of draw, avoiding contamination, and maintaining sample integrity.
Patient Safety and Infection Control +
Understand the importance of hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper disposal of sharps, and adherence to safety standards during capillary puncture procedures.
Professional Documentation & Communication +
Develop skills in labeling specimens, recording results, and communicating with patients to provide clear instructions and ensure a positive care experience.

By completing this microcredential, learners will gain practical knowledge of capillary puncture techniques, specimen handling, and patient care skills required to safely and effectively support diagnostic procedures in clinical settings. Want to build complete healthcare skills?
