About the Course:

The Care and Handling of Powered Surgical Instruments microcredential equips learners with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely inspect, handle, clean, lubricate, assemble, test, and prepare powered surgical instruments for sterilization and clinical use. Through immersive VR simulations, learners will practice proper handling techniques that protect delicate equipment, ensure optimal instrument performance, and reduce the risk of equipment damage and surgical complications. 

The course emphasizes proper disassembly and assembly procedures, manufacturer guidelines, inspection methods, cleaning techniques, functional testing, lubrication, sterilization preparation, battery management, and safe storage practices to maintain instrument reliability and support patient safety. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the importance of proper care and handling of powered surgical instruments in maintaining equipment performance and patient safety.  
  • Identify the components, functions, and operating principles of commonly used powered surgical instruments.  
  • Differentiate between cleaning, lubrication, inspection, testing, assembly, sterilization preparation, and storage requirements for powered instruments.
