About the Course:

Clinical Eye Irrigation Techniques is a common clinical procedure used to flush the eye and remove foreign material, chemical substances, or other irritants when clinically appropriate. In this microcredential, learners are introduced to the purpose, indications, contraindications, and clinical significance of eye irrigation in physician offices, outpatient clinics, urgent care settings, and other healthcare environments.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners gain practical experience preparing patients and equipment, performing eye irrigation using proper techniques, and following established patient safety and infection prevention protocols. The course emphasizes correct patient positioning, appropriate irrigation solution selection, controlled irrigation technique, and maintaining patient comfort throughout the procedure.

Learners will also practice recognizing abnormal findings and potential complications, monitoring patient responses, and documenting the procedure accurately. The course reinforces professionalism, scope of practice, infection control, and safe clinical procedures required in medical assisting environments.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the purpose, indications, and contraindications of eye irrigation.
  • Understand proper equipment preparation, irrigation solution selection, and patient safety requirements.
  • Demonstrate appropriate patient preparation and positioning.
  • Perform eye irrigation using proper technique and established clinical protocols.
  • Apply infection control, PPE, and equipment safety procedures.
  • Recognize abnormal findings, patient discomfort, and potential complications.
  • Accurately document the procedure and communicate relevant findings to the supervising healthcare provider.

Clinical eye irrigation training for medical assistant students

Workforce Development

Medical assistant eye irrigation training with infection control

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare healthcare learners with essential clinical skills required in today's medical assisting environments. This microcredential develops competency in eye assessment, patient preparation, eye irrigation techniques, infection prevention, complication recognition, and clinical documentation necessary to support safe and effective patient care.

Understanding Eye Irrigation
Explore interactive 3D visuals explaining eye anatomy, common eye irritants, foreign materials, and the clinical purpose of eye irrigation. Learn when irrigation may be appropriate, when additional medical evaluation is required, and how proper technique supports safe removal of irritants while protecting the eye.
Patient Preparation and Safety Procedures +
Learn the principles of safe eye irrigation, including reviewing the patient's history, identifying potential contraindications, assessing the affected eye, explaining the procedure, gathering equipment, selecting an appropriate irrigation solution, and positioning the patient correctly. Experience virtual demonstrations of proper preparation and patient safety practices.
Eye Irrigation Procedure +
Engage in immersive VR scenarios to practice patient identification, equipment setup, eye assessment, proper positioning, controlled irrigation, and monitoring patient responses. Develop confidence in performing the procedure while maintaining patient comfort, safety, communication, and clinical professionalism.
Infection Control and Patient Safety +
Understand the importance of hand hygiene, appropriate PPE, infection prevention, equipment sanitation, and safe handling of clinical materials. Follow standard precautions throughout the procedure and maintain appropriate technique to reduce the risk of contamination and support a safe healthcare environment.
Complication Recognition and Documentation +
Develop skills in recognizing signs of persistent pain, redness, swelling, visual changes, bleeding, excessive tearing, or other unexpected responses during and after irrigation. Learn proper documentation techniques and reporting procedures to ensure relevant findings are communicated promptly to the supervising healthcare provider.

By completing this microcredential, learners will gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience in performing patient eye irrigation within the medical assisting scope of practice. Learners will develop essential competencies in eye assessment, patient preparation, irrigation techniques, infection control, complication recognition, patient communication, and clinical documentation necessary to support safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care in CMA and allied health settings.
