About the Course:

The Oral Suspension microcredential equips pharmacy technician students with essential knowledge and hands-on skills to accurately compound non-sterile oral liquid medications. Learners will understand the principles of tablet crushing, levigation, proper dilution, volume measurement, labeling, and final product verification to ensure medication safety and effectiveness.

Through immersive VR simulations, students will practice real-world compounding procedures including donning gloves, disinfecting work surfaces, crushing tablets into uniform powder, incorporating a suspending vehicle, adjusting to final volume, transferring to a labeled prescription bottle, and preparing the product for pharmacist verification. Expand your pharmacy career by enrolling in the Pharmacy Technician Program.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the purpose and importance of compounding oral suspensions in pharmacy practice.
  • Demonstrate proper non-sterile compounding techniques including tablet trituration and levigation.
  • Accurately measure and adjust final volume using appropriate pharmacy equipment.
  • Apply safe handling, hygiene, and contamination-prevention procedures during preparation.
  • Perform proper transfer, labeling, and final product readiness procedures for pharmacist review.
  • Recognize the importance of shaking instructions and patient counseling considerations for suspensions.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Workforce Development

Measuring oral suspension accurately using pharmacy equipment

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare pharmacy technician students to perform precise, compliant, and safety-focused compounding procedures. This microcredential strengthens attention to detail, measurement accuracy, infection control awareness, and quality assurance skills required in modern pharmacy settings.

Non-Sterile Preparation & Safety
Immerse in guided VR simulations that reinforce proper glove use, 70% isopropyl alcohol disinfection of gloves, workspace preparation, and safe handling of medications and equipment prior to compounding.
Tablet Trituration & Levigation +
Practice crushing tablets using a mortar and pestle until a fine, uniform powder is achieved. Learners then incorporate a suspending vehicle, levigating the mixture into a smooth, lump-free paste before gradually forming a pourable suspension.
Volume Adjustment & Measurement Accuracy +
Develop precision in transferring the preparation into a graduated cylinder, rinsing the mortar to ensure complete drug transfer, and adjusting the final volume accurately at eye level to prevent dosing errors.
Transfer, Labeling & Final Verification +
Safely transfer the finished suspension into a properly labeled medication bottle, secure the cap tightly, and prepare the product for pharmacist verification including drug name, strength, quantity, directions, and patient information. Learners also reinforce the importance of labeling instructions such as “Shake Well” to ensure proper dosing.
Quality & Compounding Accuracy +
Understand technician responsibilities in maintaining accuracy, preventing cross-contamination, ensuring complete drug transfer, and supporting pharmacist verification processes.

By completing this microcredential, pharmacy technician students will gain the practical skills and confidence to compound oral suspensions safely, accurately, and efficiently—supporting medication effectiveness, patient safety, and pharmacy quality standards. Take your pharmacy career to the next level by enrolling in the Pharmacy Technician Training Course at ImmerseLearn.
