About the Course:

The Patient-Specific Solution Compounding microcredential equips pharmacy technician students with the essential knowledge and hands-on skills required to accurately prepare a customized oral or topical solution using proper non-sterile compounding techniques and pharmacy safety standards as taught in our Pharmacy Technician course.

Learners will practice precision weighing, accurate liquid measurement, controlled heating, magnetic stirring, volume adjustments, and final product transfer while maintaining contamination control and documentation compliance.

Through immersive VR simulations, students will engage in step-by-step compounding procedures including glove disinfection using 70% isopropyl alcohol, weighing active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) powder, dissolving API in purified water, applying heat and magnetic stirring for uniform mixing, adding glycerin to enhance solubility, adjusting final volume, transferring to a prescription bottle, labeling, and pharmacist verification. The simulation reinforces accuracy, hygiene, safety, and workflow compliance at every stage.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the importance of patient-specific solution compounding in pharmacy practice.

  • Follow labeling, documentation, and pharmacist verification protocols.

  • Transfer compounded solution safely into prescription containers.

  • Adjust final volume using purified water to achieve prescribed concentration.

  • Utilize magnetic stir plate and stir bar for uniform solution preparation.

  • Perform precise liquid measurement and controlled heating techniques.

  • Apply proper glove disinfection and workspace sanitation procedures.

  • Demonstrate accurate weighing of API using a digital balance and weigh boat.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Workforce Development

Pharmacy solution preparation, labeling, and pharmacist verification compliance

At ImmerseLearn, we empower pharmacy technician students to build precision, safety awareness, and procedural confidence in customized compounding workflows. This microcredential strengthens measurement accuracy, contamination prevention practices, workflow discipline, equipment handling, and regulatory compliance skills essential for real-world pharmacy environments.

Workspace Preparation & Safety Protocols
Begin by donning non-sterile gloves and disinfecting glove surfaces using 70% isopropyl alcohol to ensure contamination control. Practice proper bottle handling, cap placement, and clean workstation setup before initiating compounding steps. Reinforce habits of environmental sanitation, equipment readiness, and professional workflow organization.
API Weighing & Liquid Preparation +
Measure 1.2 grams of API powder using a weigh boat and digital balance, confirming precise measurement before proceeding. Accurately measure 50 mL of purified water into a beaker and position it on a hot plate. Develop proficiency in preparing materials systematically to maintain compounding efficiency and accuracy.
Dissolution & Solution Enhancement +
Initiate mixing using a magnetic stir bar and stir plate to promote dissolution of the API. Observe solution clarity and identify the need for glycerin addition to enhance solubility and uniformity. Practice controlled heating and mixing adjustments to achieve a consistent, fully dissolved preparation without contamination or product degradation.
Volume Adjustment & Final Transfer +
Transfer the prepared mixture into a larger beaker and adjust the total volume to 120 mL using purified water. Demonstrate accurate volume calibration and uniform mixing before transferring the final solution into a prescription bottle. Secure the cap tightly and ensure leak-proof containment.
Quality Assurance & Pharmacist Verification +
Clean and disinfect the work surface, return equipment to proper storage, and verify that all ingredient containers are tightly sealed. Ensure proper labeling, concentration accuracy, and contamination-free preparation. Present the compounded medication to the pharmacist for final verification prior to dispensing.

By completing this microcredential, pharmacy technician students will gain the technical precision, sanitation discipline, and procedural confidence required to safely prepare patient-specific solution medications, ensuring dosage accuracy, product stability, and adherence to professional pharmacy standards.
