About the Course:

The Vaginal Formulation Compounding microcredential equips pharmacy technician students with essential knowledge and hands-on skills to accurately prepare non-sterile vaginal suppositories. Learners will understand proper weighing techniques, base selection, melting procedures, drug incorporation, molding, trimming, and final product handling to ensure dose uniformity, patient safety, and product quality.

Through immersive VR simulations, students will practice real-world compounding procedures including donning gloves, disinfecting work surfaces with 70% isopropyl alcohol, accurately weighing zinc oxide, melting the suppository base, incorporating the active ingredient using controlled stirring, pouring into molds, trimming excess base, demolding, weighing finished units, packaging, and preparing the product for pharmacist verification. Take your pharmacy career to the next level by enrolling in the Pharmacy Technician Training Program.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the purpose and therapeutic use of vaginal suppository formulations in pharmacy practice.

  • Demonstrate accurate weighing and measurement of active ingredients and suppository bases.

  • Perform proper melting and incorporation techniques to ensure uniform drug distribution.

  • Apply safe non-sterile compounding procedures including hygiene and contamination prevention.

  • Demonstrate correct molding, cooling, trimming, and demolding techniques.

  • Verify dose uniformity and prepare the final product for pharmacist review and dispensing.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Safe non-sterile compounding practices for pharmacy technicians

Workforce Development

Accurate weighing of active ingredients in pharmacy compounding

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare pharmacy technician students to perform precise, compliant, and quality-focused non-sterile compounding procedures. This microcredential strengthens accuracy in weighing, thermal processing awareness, mixing consistency, dose uniformity verification, and quality assurance skills required in modern pharmacy compounding environments. Students can further enhance their pharmacy career by enrolling in the Pharmacy Technician Course.

Non-Sterile Preparation & Safety
Immerse in guided VR simulations that reinforce proper glove use, 70% isopropyl alcohol disinfection of gloves, workspace preparation, equipment inspection, and safe handling of zinc oxide powder and suppository base prior to compounding.
Weighing & Base Preparation +
Practice accurately weighing zinc oxide using a sieve and weigh boat to ensure fine particle distribution. Learners measure the appropriate quantity of suppository base (e.g., polybase), record weights, and prepare the base for melting using controlled microwave heating followed by hot plate stirring to achieve a uniform molten consistency.
Incorporation & Mixing Technique +
Develop skill in gradually incorporating weighed zinc oxide into the melted base while stirring at controlled speed to promote even distribution and prevent clumping. Emphasis is placed on maintaining temperature control and ensuring a smooth, homogeneous mixture before molding.
Molding, Cooling & Finishing +
Pour the uniform mixture into a clean aluminum suppository mold without overfilling cavities. After cooling and solidification, learners heat a spatula to trim excess base for clean edges, open the mold safely, demold finished suppositories, and inspect for uniformity and defects.
Final Verification & Packaging +
Weigh finished suppositories to confirm consistency, transfer each unit into appropriate packaging, and secure the container properly. Learners prepare the product for pharmacist verification, reinforcing the importance of correct labeling, strength confirmation, quantity accuracy, and quality checks prior to dispensing.
Quality & Dose Uniformity +
Understand technician responsibilities in maintaining accurate weighing, thorough mixing, proper molding technique, and prevention of contamination. Emphasis is placed on dose uniformity, patient safety, and compliance with non-sterile compounding standards.

By completing this microcredential, pharmacy technician students will gain the practical skills and confidence to compound vaginal suppositories safely, accurately, and efficiently supporting therapeutic effectiveness, product quality, and pharmacy compliance standards.
