About the Course:

This Diagnosing and Replacing Current Relay microcredential trains HVAC and refrigeration technicians to safely diagnose, test, remove, and replace faulty current relays in refrigeration systems. Learners practice real-world service procedures including safe power isolation, panel removal, wire disconnection, resistance testing using a multimeter, and proper relay installation.

The course emphasizes electrical safety, accurate ohm testing interpretation (including OL readings), and correct reconnection procedures to ensure reliable compressor startup and refrigerator operation. For technicians looking to expand their expertise, advanced training is available through our Hands-on HVAC Technician Program.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify symptoms of a faulty current relay, including compressor not starting or intermittent operation

  • Reassemble components and verify proper refrigerator operation

  • Install and secure a compatible replacement relay

  • Interpret OL (open line) readings to confirm relay failure

  • Use a multimeter set to ohms to test relay continuity

  • Disconnect relay wiring safely and methodically

  • Remove rear access panels using proper tools

  • Safely disconnect power and shut off water supply before servicing

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Workforce Development

Hands-on electrical troubleshooting and relay testing for HVAC systems

At ImmerseLearn, technicians gain hands-on, job-ready skills through immersive VR training. This microcredential strengthens electrical diagnostics, safe disassembly, and accurate component replacement, helping reduce errors and callbacks.

How this course strengthens workforce skills:

Current Relay Diagnostics
Learners isolate the unit, access the compressor compartment, and test the relay using a multimeter in ohms mode. They interpret OL readings to confirm failure and avoid unnecessary compressor replacement.
Safe Shutdown and Disassembly Procedures +
The course reinforces proper service sequencing, including unplugging the unit, shutting off water supply, removing panels, and disconnecting wires safely. Emphasis is placed on safety and organized reassembly.
Cause Identification +
Technicians identify common causes of relay failure such as overload, wear, heat damage, and moisture exposure by analyzing test results and system behavior.
Replacement and Verification +
Learners install a compatible relay, reconnect wiring and water lines, restore power, and verify proper compressor startup to ensure reliable refrigerator operation.

By completing this microcredential, HVAC and refrigeration technicians will build the technical accuracy, electrical troubleshooting skills, and confidence required to diagnose faulty current relays, replace them safely, and restore reliable refrigeration system performance in real-world service environments.
