About the Course:

Electronic Blood Pressure Measurement is a fundamental clinical skill for Nursing Assistants working in hospitals, long-term care facilities, outpatient clinics, and other healthcare environments. In this microcredential, learners are introduced to the purpose and clinical importance of measuring blood pressure, including its role in assessing cardiovascular health, monitoring patient condition, and detecting abnormalities such as hypertension or hypotension.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners gain hands-on experience performing electronic blood pressure measurement while following proper patient interaction procedures, patient identification protocols, hand hygiene practices, equipment preparation, cuff placement techniques, and accurate reading procedures. The course emphasizes proper positioning, patient comfort, correct cuff alignment, and maintaining safety and professionalism throughout the procedure.

Learners will also practice identifying the brachial artery, operating electronic blood pressure equipment correctly, documenting systolic and diastolic readings accurately, and completing the procedure according to established healthcare protocols. The course highlights professionalism, infection prevention, patient communication, and adherence to clinical standards essential in healthcare settings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the purpose and importance of blood pressure measurement in patient assessment.
  • Understand patient identification procedures, hand hygiene practices, and patient preparation requirements.
  • Demonstrate proper positioning of the patient and correct arm placement for accurate measurement.
  • Perform electronic blood pressure measurement using proper cuff placement and machine operation techniques.
  • Apply infection control and patient safety procedures throughout the procedure.
  • Accurately record and document blood pressure readings according to healthcare guidelines.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare healthcare learners with essential patient care and clinical assessment skills required in modern healthcare environments. This microcredential develops competency in patient identification, blood pressure monitoring, equipment handling, infection prevention, accurate documentation, and patient communication skills necessary for delivering safe and effective healthcare support.

Understanding Blood Pressure Monitoring
Explore interactive 3D visuals explaining blood pressure physiology, systolic and diastolic pressure readings, circulation within the cardiovascular system, and the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring in identifying potential health concerns. Understand how accurate blood pressure measurement supports patient diagnosis and ongoing clinical care.
Patient Interaction and Preparation Procedures +
Learn the principles of patient communication and identification, including introducing yourself, verifying patient identity using two identifiers, checking the patient ID bracelet, explaining the procedure clearly, and maintaining patient privacy. Experience virtual demonstrations focused on professionalism, patient comfort, and preparation before beginning the procedure.
Equipment Preparation and Cuff Placement Procedure +
Engage in immersive VR scenarios to practice locating and preparing the electronic blood pressure monitor, connecting cuff tubing securely, identifying the brachial artery through palpation, positioning the patient’s arm correctly at heart level, and applying the cuff firmly around the upper arm with proper artery alignment. Learn the importance of correct cuff placement for obtaining accurate readings.
Blood Pressure Measurement and Documentation +
Understand the proper steps involved in initiating blood pressure measurement, instructing the patient to remain still during the reading, observing automatic cuff inflation, waiting for the machine to display systolic and diastolic values, removing the cuff safely, and accurately documenting the recorded measurements. Learn the importance of careful observation and correct documentation practices.
Infection Control and Procedure Completion +
Develop skills in maintaining proper hand hygiene before and after patient contact, using sanitizer correctly, ensuring patient comfort throughout the procedure, maintaining a clean working environment, communicating results professionally, and following infection prevention protocols that protect both patient and caregiver safety during routine vital sign assessment procedures.

By completing this microcredential, learners will gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience in performing electronic blood pressure measurement. Learners will develop essential competencies in patient identification, equipment preparation, cuff application, accurate blood pressure monitoring, documentation procedures, infection prevention, and patient communication skills necessary to perform routine clinical assessments safely and effectively in Nursing Assistant and allied health settings.
