About the Course:

Intradermal Allergy Testing is an important diagnostic procedure for Clinical Medical Assistants working in allergy clinics, physician offices, dermatology practices, and outpatient healthcare settings. In this microcredential, learners are introduced to the purpose and clinical significance of intradermal testing, including its use in identifying allergies to environmental allergens, medications, and other substances when additional diagnostic sensitivity is required beyond skin prick testing.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners gain practical experience performing intradermal testing while following proper patient preparation procedures, accurate intradermal injection techniques, allergen administration protocols, and patient safety guidelines. The course emphasizes correct injection depth, site selection, observation of patient responses, and adherence to infection prevention standards.

Learners will also practice recognizing normal and abnormal reactions, measuring and documenting skin responses accurately, and communicating findings effectively to supervising healthcare providers. The course reinforces professionalism, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and precise diagnostic testing practices required in clinical healthcare environments.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the purpose and clinical significance of Intradermal Testing.
  • Understand testing procedures, allergen preparation, injection techniques, and patient safety requirements.
  • Demonstrate proper patient preparation and allergy assessment procedures.
  • Perform Intradermal Testing using correct intradermal injection techniques and clinical protocols.
  • Apply infection control and safety procedures throughout the testing process.
  • Accurately observe, measure, document, and communicate test results.

Course delivered through our LMS and accessible in both VR and web. Learn on the web anytime, or enjoy immersive VR training with your own Oculus VR headset.

Intradermal allergy testing training for medical assistant students

Workforce Development

Medical assistant performing an intradermal allergy test

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare healthcare learners with essential clinical and diagnostic skills required in today's medical assisting environments. This microcredential develops competency in intradermal allergy testing, patient preparation, safe injection practices, infection prevention, reaction assessment, and medical documentation necessary for delivering accurate and high-quality patient care.

Explore our hands-on Clinical Medical Assistant Training to build broader skills in patient preparation, diagnostic procedures, injections, and clinical safety.

Understanding Intradermal Testing
Explore interactive 3D visuals explaining the immune response, allergic reactions, and the clinical purpose of intradermal testing. Learn when intradermal testing is appropriate, how it differs from skin prick testing, and its role in supporting accurate allergy diagnosis and treatment planning.
Test Preparation and Safety Procedures +
Learn the principles of Intradermal Testing, including reviewing patient history, verifying allergies, preparing allergen extracts, selecting appropriate testing sites, and following patient safety protocols. Experience virtual demonstrations of proper equipment preparation and compliance with clinical testing standards.
Intradermal Injection and Testing Procedure +
Engage in immersive VR scenarios to practice patient identification, skin preparation, accurate intradermal injection of allergen extracts, formation of the proper wheal, and observation of patient responses throughout the testing procedure. Develop confidence in performing the procedure while maintaining patient comfort and safety.
Infection Control and Patient Safety +
Understand the importance of hand hygiene, appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE), skin antisepsis, sharps safety, and proper disposal of testing materials. Follow infection prevention and standard precaution protocols to maintain a safe and compliant clinical testing environment.
Result Interpretation and Documentation +
Develop skills in accurately identifying and measuring positive and negative skin reactions, including wheal and flare responses. Learn proper documentation techniques, reporting protocols, and effective communication of findings to supervising healthcare providers to support clinical decision-making.

By completing this microcredential, learners will gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience in performing Intradermal Testing. Learners will develop essential competencies in allergy assessment, patient preparation, intradermal injection techniques, infection control, reaction interpretation, and medical documentation necessary to support accurate diagnostic testing and safe, efficient patient care in CMA and allied health settings.
