Microbiology in the CSSD
About the Course:
The Microbiology in the CSSD microcredential introduces learners to the microscopic world that influences infection prevention and sterilization in healthcare environments. Through immersive VR and interactive 3D modules, learners will explore key microorganisms, their modes of transmission, and the principles of microbial control within the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD). This course bridges theoretical microbiology with practical sterile processing applications, empowering learners to make informed, safety-driven decisions in their daily work as part of a sterile processing technician training pathway.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the fundamentals of microbiology and the characteristics of common healthcare-associated microorganisms.
- Identify sources and routes of microbial contamination in the CSSD.
- Explain the principles of asepsis, disinfection, and sterilization based on microbial resistance.
- Demonstrate awareness of infection prevention protocols and standard precautions.
- Relate microbiological concepts to instrument reprocessing, handling, and storage practices.
Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Workforce Development

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare sterile processing and surgical support professionals to apply microbiological knowledge in maintaining aseptic conditions and preventing infection risks through our sterile processing technician program. This module strengthens scientific understanding, critical thinking, and procedural accuracy within the CSSD environment.
By completing this microcredential, learners will develop a foundational understanding of microbiology in the CSSD building confidence and competence in preventing contamination, supporting sterilization integrity, and ensuring safe surgical outcomes.
