About the Course:

This Micrometer Measurement microcredential introduces manufacturing associates to the proper use of outside micrometers for performing precise dimensional inspections of manufactured components. Learners will practice measuring the thickness and outside diameter of common mechanical parts, including gears and pipes, while developing an understanding of precision measurement techniques, proper instrument handling, and inspection best practices.

Using an immersive virtual environment, learners will safely operate both small and large outside micrometers, correctly position workpieces, adjust the spindle using the ratchet mechanism, and interpret measurement readings accurately. The course emphasizes proper measuring pressure, instrument care, repeatable inspection methods, and the importance of dimensional accuracy in modern manufacturing and quality control.

Through interactive VR-based learning, participants will gain the confidence to perform precision measurements, minimize measurement errors, and support product quality by applying industry-standard inspection procedures. This microcredential prepares learners for real-world manufacturing environments where accurate dimensional verification is essential for maintaining product specifications and production quality.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the components and functions of small and large outside micrometers
  • Demonstrate proper handling and positioning of workpieces during measurement
  • Measure the thickness of gears using an outside micrometer
  • Measure pipe wall thickness and outside diameter accurately
  • Measure gear outside diameter using appropriate inspection techniques
  • Apply proper spindle adjustment and measuring pressure for consistent readings
  • Interpret micrometer measurements accurately to verify component dimensions
  • Understand the importance of precision measurement in manufacturing quality control

Learners can also expand their instrument-handling skills through our precision measurement tools training.

Course delivered through our LMS and accessible in both VR and web. Learn on the web anytime, or enjoy immersive VR training with your own Oculus VR headset.

Workforce Development

Manufacturing associate measuring a pipe outside diameter

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare manufacturing associates with workplace-ready inspection skills through immersive VR learning experiences. This microcredential develops precision measurement techniques, dimensional inspection skills, equipment handling, quality awareness, and confidence in using industry-standard measuring instruments to support manufacturing accuracy and product quality.

How this course strengthens workforce skills:

Precision Measurement Fundamentals
Learn the purpose, construction, and operation of outside micrometers used throughout manufacturing. Understand how precision measuring instruments ensure dimensional accuracy, support quality standards, and verify that components meet engineering specifications.
Measuring Component Thickness +
Practice measuring the thickness of gears and pipe walls using a small outside micrometer. Learners develop proper positioning techniques, apply consistent measuring pressure, and obtain accurate, repeatable thickness measurements while following standard inspection procedures.
Measuring Outside Diameters +
Develop practical experience using a large outside micrometer to measure the outside diameter of cylindrical and circular components such as pipes and gears. Learn proper alignment techniques to ensure reliable measurements and minimize inspection errors.
Quality Inspection and Best Practices +
Understand the role of precision measurement in manufacturing quality control. Learners perform multiple dimensional inspections while reinforcing proper instrument handling, workpiece positioning, measurement consistency, and inspection accuracy required to support high-quality manufacturing operations.

By completing this microcredential, manufacturing associates will develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to confidently use outside micrometers, perform accurate dimensional inspections, verify component specifications, and contribute to safe, efficient, and quality-focused manufacturing operations.
