About the Course:

This Packaged Rooftop Unit (RTU) Fundamentals microcredential trains HVAC associates to understand, operate, inspect, and safely maintain packaged rooftop units (RTUs) commonly used in commercial and light industrial environments. Learners will explore key RTU components, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, fans, filters, dampers, electrical controls, and thermostats, while practicing essential inspection and service procedures. 

The course emphasizes safe startup and shutdown, component identification, system inspection, basic troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance. Through immersive training, learners develop the practical skills needed to support reliable RTU operation, identify common issues, and perform service tasks safely and efficiently.

RTU Operation and Inspection +
Practice performing basic RTU startup, shutdown, and operational checks. Learners inspect equipment condition, airflow, filters, coils, fans, electrical connections, and other accessible components while recognizing signs of abnormal operation, damage, or reduced performance.
RTU Safety and Hazard Identification +
Recognize hazards associated with rooftop equipment, electrical systems, rotating components, hot and cold surfaces, elevated work areas, and moving machinery. Learners apply appropriate PPE, follow lockout/tagout principles where required, and maintain safe work practices during RTU inspection and service activities.
Preventive Maintenance and Troubleshooting +
Perform basic preventive maintenance activities designed to support reliable RTU operation. Learners practice checking filters, coils, fans, belts, electrical components, and other serviceable areas while identifying common operational issues and determining when additional troubleshooting or qualified service is required.
