Patient Feeding and Nutrition Assistance
About the Course:
Patient Feeding and Nutrition Assistance is a fundamental nursing skill that ensures patients receive adequate nutrition and hydration while maintaining their comfort, dignity, and safety. In this microcredential, learners develop the knowledge and practical skills required to safely assist patients with meals while following established patient care, infection prevention, and feeding safety protocols.
Through immersive VR simulations, learners practice the complete feeding assistance procedure from preparing the environment and verifying patient identity to assisting with feeding, offering fluids, monitoring swallowing, and completing post-feeding care. Throughout the experience, emphasis is placed on effective patient communication, maintaining privacy and dignity, practicing proper hand hygiene, and recognizing signs of swallowing difficulty or patient discomfort.
The course also reinforces clinical best practices by teaching learners how to prepare meal trays, position patients appropriately, offer food at a safe pace, encourage proper chewing and swallowing, maintain infection control, and provide compassionate assistance throughout the feeding process. By combining technical skills with patient-centered care, learners build the confidence and competency needed to safely assist patients with feeding in healthcare settings.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the purpose and importance of assisted feeding in maintaining patient nutrition, hydration, and overall well-being.
- Understand patient identification procedures, hand hygiene practices, privacy protocols, and patient preparation requirements before assisting with feeding.
- Demonstrate proper meal preparation, protective clothing placement, and feeding assistance techniques using safe patient care practices.
- Perform safe patient feeding by offering food and fluids at an appropriate pace while monitoring chewing and swallowing.
- Apply infection prevention, patient communication, and patient safety procedures throughout the feeding process.
- Complete post-feeding care by ensuring patient comfort, maintaining cleanliness, disposing of waste appropriately, and following proper infection control practices.
Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.
