About the Course:

Patient Feeding and Nutrition Assistance is a fundamental nursing skill that ensures patients receive adequate nutrition and hydration while maintaining their comfort, dignity, and safety. In this microcredential, learners develop the knowledge and practical skills required to safely assist patients with meals while following established patient care, infection prevention, and feeding safety protocols.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners practice the complete feeding assistance procedure from preparing the environment and verifying patient identity to assisting with feeding, offering fluids, monitoring swallowing, and completing post-feeding care. Throughout the experience, emphasis is placed on effective patient communication, maintaining privacy and dignity, practicing proper hand hygiene, and recognizing signs of swallowing difficulty or patient discomfort.

The course also reinforces clinical best practices by teaching learners how to prepare meal trays, position patients appropriately, offer food at a safe pace, encourage proper chewing and swallowing, maintain infection control, and provide compassionate assistance throughout the feeding process. By combining technical skills with patient-centered care, learners build the confidence and competency needed to safely assist patients with feeding in healthcare settings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the purpose and importance of assisted feeding in maintaining patient nutrition, hydration, and overall well-being.
  • Understand patient identification procedures, hand hygiene practices, privacy protocols, and patient preparation requirements before assisting with feeding.
  • Demonstrate proper meal preparation, protective clothing placement, and feeding assistance techniques using safe patient care practices.
  • Perform safe patient feeding by offering food and fluids at an appropriate pace while monitoring chewing and swallowing.
  • Apply infection prevention, patient communication, and patient safety procedures throughout the feeding process.
  • Complete post-feeding care by ensuring patient comfort, maintaining cleanliness, disposing of waste appropriately, and following proper infection control practices.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare healthcare learners with essential patient care and nutritional assistance skills required in modern healthcare environments. This microcredential develops competency in patient identification, feeding assistance procedures, meal preparation, infection prevention, patient communication, swallowing observation, hydration assistance, patient safety, and compassionate caregiving skills necessary for delivering safe and effective nutritional support.

Understanding Assisted Feeding and Nutritional Support
Explore interactive 3D visuals explaining the importance of proper nutrition and hydration in patient recovery, the role of Nursing Assistants in supporting safe feeding, common feeding precautions, swallowing safety principles, and techniques that promote patient comfort and independence. Understand how effective feeding assistance contributes to improved patient health, recovery, and quality of care.
Patient Interaction and Preparation Procedures +
Learn the principles of patient communication and identification, including introducing yourself, verifying patient identity by checking the patient's name and date of birth, explaining the feeding procedure clearly, and maintaining patient privacy by closing doors and using privacy curtains when necessary. Experience virtual demonstrations focused on proper hand hygiene, glove application, preparing the patient, protecting clothing with a feeding cloth, and preparing the meal before feeding begins.
Assisting the Patient During Feeding +
Engage in immersive VR scenarios to practice opening food containers, preparing eating utensils, encouraging the patient to open their mouth, offering small spoonfuls of food, pacing feeding appropriately, and ensuring the patient chews and swallows completely before providing the next bite. Learn how to communicate effectively with the patient throughout the feeding process, observe for signs of discomfort or swallowing difficulty, and encourage safe, comfortable eating habits.
Fluid Assistance and Post-Feeding Care +
Develop skills in assisting patients with drinking fluids safely, supporting proper swallowing, wiping the patient's mouth gently after feeding, disposing of used materials appropriately, maintaining infection prevention procedures, and ensuring patient comfort following the meal. Learn patient safety protocols that promote dignity, prevent aspiration risks, and support safe nutritional care throughout the feeding process.

By completing this microcredential, learners will gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience in safely assisting patients with feeding. Learners will develop essential competencies in patient identification, feeding assistance procedures, meal preparation, safe food and fluid administration, swallowing observation, infection prevention, patient communication, post-feeding care, and patient safety skills necessary to provide safe, compassionate, and effective nutritional support in Nursing Assistant and allied health settings.
