About the Course:

Patient Side-Lying Positioning is a fundamental nursing skill that promotes patient comfort, helps prevent pressure injuries, supports recovery, and reduces the risk of complications associated with prolonged bed rest. In this microcredential, learners develop the knowledge and hands-on skills required to safely position a patient in the side-lying position while following established patient safety, body mechanics, and infection prevention practices.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners practice the complete side-positioning procedure from preparing the environment and verifying patient identity to repositioning the patient, providing appropriate support with pillows, and completing post-procedure care. Throughout the experience, emphasis is placed on effective patient communication, maintaining privacy and dignity, using safe patient handling techniques, and ensuring patient comfort.

The course also reinforces clinical best practices by teaching learners how to apply proper body mechanics, adjust the bed safely, support vulnerable body areas, recognize signs of patient discomfort, and perform the procedure according to healthcare standards. By combining technical skills with compassionate patient care, learners build the confidence and competency needed to safely perform one of the most common patient positioning procedures in healthcare settings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the purpose and clinical importance of side positioning in patient care.
  • Prepare the patient, equipment, and environment while maintaining privacy and infection prevention standards.
  • Verify patient identity and communicate the procedure using patient-centered techniques.
  • Demonstrate safe body mechanics and proper techniques for repositioning a patient onto their side.
  • Position pillows correctly to support the patient's back, arms, and legs while maintaining proper body alignment.
  • Complete post-procedure care, ensure patient comfort, and document the intervention according to clinical protocols.

Learners can also build related mobility skills through patient ambulation techniques.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Nursing assistant positioning pillows for patient comfort and safety

Patient Side-Lying Positioning is an essential competency for Nursing Assistants and allied healthcare professionals. This microcredential provides practical experience in repositioning patients while strengthening skills in patient safety, communication, infection prevention, body mechanics, pressure injury prevention, teamwork, clinical observation, and professional documentation. These competencies prepare learners to confidently assist patients across hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, and other healthcare settings.

Foundations of Patient Positioning
Begin by exploring interactive 3D learning modules that introduce the principles of patient positioning, pressure injury prevention, body alignment, safe patient handling, and proper body mechanics. Learners also gain an understanding of when side positioning is appropriate and its role in promoting patient comfort, circulation, respiratory function, and overall well-being.
Preparing for the Procedure +
Enter a realistic clinical environment where learners practice preparing the patient care area by ensuring privacy, performing hand hygiene, introducing themselves, verifying patient identity, explaining the procedure, adjusting the bed to a safe working height, and lowering the appropriate side rail. This section emphasizes patient communication, professionalism, safety, and infection prevention before repositioning begins.
Performing Side Positioning +
Using immersive VR scenarios, learners practice removing bedding as needed, positioning the patient's arms safely, using the draw sheet to reposition the patient, and turning the patient onto their side using proper body mechanics and safe handling techniques. Learners then correctly position pillows behind the back, beneath the upper arm, and between the knees and legs to provide support, maintain spinal alignment, and maximize patient comfort.
Evaluating Patient Comfort and Safety +
After repositioning, learners assess the patient's comfort, body alignment, and overall safety while ensuring adequate support and pressure relief. The module reinforces recognizing signs of discomfort, confirming proper positioning, replacing bedding, raising the side rail, and maintaining a safe patient environment.
Completing the Patient Encounter +
Conclude the procedure by ensuring the patient is comfortable, answering any questions, restoring the room to a safe condition, performing final hand hygiene, and documenting the repositioning according to healthcare protocols. Learners reinforce professional behaviors while promoting patient dignity, safety, and quality care.

Upon successful completion of this microcredential, learners will be able to confidently position a patient on their side while following clinical best practices for safety, comfort, and infection prevention. They will demonstrate proficiency in patient preparation, communication, identity verification, safe repositioning techniques, proper pillow placement, pressure injury prevention, post-procedure care, and documentation skills essential for Nursing Assistants and other allied healthcare professionals.
