About the Course:

Patient Wound Care and Dressing Procedures is a fundamental patient care skill for Nursing Assistants working in a variety of healthcare settings. This microcredential introduces learners to essential wound care practices, emphasizing infection prevention, proper wound cleansing, dressing application, patient comfort, and safe healing.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners practice performing wound care while following proper patient identification, hand hygiene, PPE usage, aseptic technique, infection prevention, communication, and safe body mechanics.

Learners will prepare the patient and environment, remove old dressings, cleanse and dry the wound, apply topical ointment and a sterile dressing, safely dispose of contaminated materials, document dressing information, and complete the procedure according to healthcare standards.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the purpose and importance of wound care in promoting healing, preventing infection, and ensuring patient comfort.  
  • Understand proper hand hygiene, PPE usage, patient identification, and preparation before performing wound care.  
  • Demonstrate correct techniques for removing old dressings, cleansing wounds, drying the wound bed, and applying topical ointments and sterile dressings.  
  • Perform a complete wound care procedure using proper sequencing, aseptic technique, and effective patient communication.

Engage in immersive VR scenarios to practice safely removing soiled dressings, disposing of contaminated materials in biohazard waste, changing gloves appropriately, preparing cleansing solution, and cleaning the wound using sterile gauze with the correct inside-to-outside circular technique. Learn proper aseptic practices, wound cleansing principles, organized workflow, and safe handling of contaminated materials.
Wound Drying, Medication Application, and Dressing +
Practice drying the wound using sterile gauze while maintaining aseptic technique, applying topical ointment with a sterile applicator, and placing a new sterile dressing securely over the wound. Learn correct dressing application techniques, contamination prevention, patient comfort measures, and methods that support optimal wound healing.
Procedure Completion and Documentation +
Develop skills in disposing of contaminated supplies, removing PPE according to protocol, performing hand hygiene, assessing patient comfort, documenting the dressing date and time, maintaining a clean environment, and completing the procedure according to healthcare standards.
