Topical Gel Compounding Simulation
About the Course:
The Topical Gel Compounding Simulation microcredential equips pharmacy technician students with the essential knowledge and hands-on skills required to accurately compound a topical gel preparation using proper aseptic and non-sterile compounding techniques. This simulation complements our pharmacy technician training program by building hands-on compounding accuracy and safety skills.
Learners will practice precision weighing, syringe measurement, solution transfer, mixing techniques, and final product dispensing into a delivery device while following safety protocols and pharmacy best practices.
Through immersive VR simulations, students will engage in step-by-step compounding procedures including measuring acyclovir powder, withdrawing lidocaine, combining poloxamer and LIPS solutions, using syringe connectors for uniform mixing, and loading the final gel into an AccuPen device. The simulation reinforces accuracy, safety, and procedural compliance at every stage.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain the purpose and importance of accurate topical compounding in pharmacy practice.
- Demonstrate proper weighing, measuring, and transferring of ingredients using balances and syringes.
- Apply safe syringe handling techniques, including needle attachment, removal, and sharps disposal.
- Perform proper mixing techniques to achieve a uniform gel consistency.
- Demonstrate the correct use of syringe connectors for controlled medication transfer.
- Safely load compounded gel into a delivery device (AccuPen) and verify proper dispensing.
- Follow documentation, labeling, and quality assurance procedures during compounding.
Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.
