About the Course:

The Topical Gel Compounding Simulation microcredential equips pharmacy technician students with the essential knowledge and hands-on skills required to accurately compound a topical gel preparation using proper aseptic and non-sterile compounding techniques. This simulation complements our pharmacy technician training program by building hands-on compounding accuracy and safety skills.

Learners will practice precision weighing, syringe measurement, solution transfer, mixing techniques, and final product dispensing into a delivery device while following safety protocols and pharmacy best practices.

Through immersive VR simulations, students will engage in step-by-step compounding procedures including measuring acyclovir powder, withdrawing lidocaine, combining poloxamer and LIPS solutions, using syringe connectors for uniform mixing, and loading the final gel into an AccuPen device. The simulation reinforces accuracy, safety, and procedural compliance at every stage.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the purpose and importance of accurate topical compounding in pharmacy practice.
  • Demonstrate proper weighing, measuring, and transferring of ingredients using balances and syringes.
  • Apply safe syringe handling techniques, including needle attachment, removal, and sharps disposal.
  • Perform proper mixing techniques to achieve a uniform gel consistency.
  • Demonstrate the correct use of syringe connectors for controlled medication transfer.
  • Safely load compounded gel into a delivery device (AccuPen) and verify proper dispensing.
  • Follow documentation, labeling, and quality assurance procedures during compounding.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

Workforce Development

Pharmacy students practicing topical gel preparation using syringe measurement and mixing methods

At ImmerseLearn, we empower pharmacy technician students to build precision, attention to detail, and confidence in compounding procedures. This microcredential strengthens technical accuracy, safety awareness, hand coordination, and adherence to pharmacy protocols essential skills for real-world pharmacy environments.

Ingredient Measurement & Preparation
Practice accurately weighing acyclovir powder using a digital balance and observing confirmation cues. Learn proper transfer techniques into a graduated conical container while maintaining clean workspace practices. Develop proficiency in withdrawing exact volumes of lidocaine, poloxamer solution, and LIPS solution using appropriate syringe sizes.
Syringe Technique & Safe Handling +
Master safe needle positioning at a 90-degree angle, plunger control, air management, and controlled withdrawal techniques. Reinforce proper needle removal, cap attachment, and disposal in sharps containers to maintain safety and compliance standards.
Mixing & Gel Formation +
Use glass stirring rods and syringe connector systems to achieve uniform blending of powder and liquid components. Practice bidirectional syringe mixing to ensure smooth gel consistency without air entrapment or product loss.
Device Loading & Final Verification +
Transfer the compounded gel into an AccuPen device using controlled plunger pressure. Attach final components securely and verify correct dispensing by rotating the dial to ensure smooth gel extrusion. Review quality checks to confirm uniformity, proper volume, and safe preparation standards.
Quality Assurance & Compliance +
Understand the importance of procedural accuracy, contamination prevention, documentation, and safe disposal practices during compounding. Participate in performance reviews within the VR simulation to reinforce compliance with pharmacy safety standards and workflow accuracy.

By completing this microcredential, pharmacy technician students will gain the technical precision and procedural confidence required to safely compound and dispense topical gel medications, ensuring product accuracy, patient safety, and adherence to professional pharmacy standards. Advance your compounding expertise with our comprehensive Pharmacy Technician Program for real-world pharmacy practice.
