About the Course:

Verbal De-escalation in Patient Care introduces Nursing Assistants to effective communication techniques for managing patients experiencing anxiety, frustration, and agitation during healthcare procedures.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will practice responding to a patient experiencing oxygen mask distress, using calm communication, active listening, empathy, reassurance, and patient-centered care. The course emphasizes recognizing emotional distress, understanding patient concerns, preventing further escalation, and maintaining a safe and supportive care environment.

Learners will develop practical skills in approaching agitated patients, establishing trust, acknowledging concerns, setting professional boundaries, assessing vital signs with patient permission, and discussing appropriate options to improve comfort during oxygen therapy.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain common causes of patient anxiety and agitation during oxygen therapy.
  • Recognize signs of emotional distress related to oxygen mask discomfort and claustrophobia.
  • Approach an anxious or agitated patient calmly and professionally.
  • Introduce oneself and explain one's role in patient care.
  • Demonstrate active listening and acknowledge patient concerns with empathy.
  • Use therapeutic communication to reassure patients and build trust.
  • Identify communication approaches that may increase frustration or escalate patient distress.
  • Maintain respectful communication and establish appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Discuss options for improving oxygen mask comfort according to the healthcare provider's plan of care.
  • Promote patient cooperation through clear communication and patient-centered care.

Verbal De-escalation in Patient Care Training for Nursing Assistants

Nursing assistant calmly reassuring an anxious patient at the bedside

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare Nursing Assistants with essential communication and patient interaction skills required in healthcare environments. This microcredential strengthens therapeutic communication, emotional awareness, empathy, conflict prevention, patient reassurance, vital sign assessment awareness, and professional bedside care through web-based and immersive VR learning.

Recognizing Patient Distress and Oxygen Mask Anxiety −
Understand how anxiety, claustrophobia, and discomfort can cause patients to become frustrated or agitated during oxygen therapy. Learners explore the patient's concerns about mask discomfort and perceived problems with oxygen delivery while recognizing the importance of addressing emotional and physical needs.
Calm Approach and Patient Communication +
Practice approaching an anxious patient calmly, introducing oneself, and explaining one's role. Learners develop awareness of relaxed body language, appropriate speaking pace, reassuring communication, and avoiding sudden movements that may increase patient anxiety.
Therapeutic Communication and Empathy +
Develop skills in active listening, acknowledging patient concerns, and responding with empathy. Learners practice supportive statements that help patients feel heard and understood while encouraging open communication and building trust.
Preventing Escalation and Setting Boundaries +
Learn to avoid confrontational responses, harsh language, arguments, and dismissive statements. Learners practice maintaining a respectful and professional approach, providing reassurance, and establishing appropriate boundaries when patient communication becomes abusive.
Vital Sign Assessment and Patient Reassurance +
Practice obtaining patient permission before assessing vital signs. Learners become familiar with applying a pulse oximeter and blood pressure cuff while explaining each step and monitoring the patient's physical condition and emotional comfort.
Supporting Oxygen Therapy and Patient Comfort +
Explore ways to address patient discomfort during oxygen therapy. Learners practice discussing mask fit and possible alternative oxygen interfaces according to the healthcare provider's plan of care. The module reinforces patient education, involvement in care decisions, and continued reassurance.

By completing this microcredential, learners will develop practical knowledge and simulated experience in verbal de-escalation and therapeutic patient communication. Learners will be able to recognize patient distress, communicate with empathy, use reassurance, prevent further escalation, maintain professional boundaries, and support patient comfort during oxygen therapy. These competencies promote patient cooperation, safety, and compassionate care in Nursing Assistant and allied health settings.
