About the Course:

This Bedpan Assistance & Patient Care microcredential trains Nursing Assistants to safely and respectfully assist patients with toileting needs when they are unable to use a regular toilet. Learners will practice proper patient positioning, bedpan placement and removal, hygiene care, infection prevention, and safe disposal procedures. 

Through immersive VR simulations, learners gain hands-on experience preparing the patient and environment, adjusting bed height, using appropriate PPE, maintaining privacy and dignity, positioning the patient safely, placing and removing the bedpan, providing perineal care, and completing the procedure while maintaining patient comfort and safety. 

The course emphasizes effective patient communication, safe body mechanics, infection control, proper waste disposal, and professional patient-centered care throughout the procedure. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the purpose of using a bedpan and the importance of patient dignity and privacy. 
  • Prepare the patient, environment, equipment, and PPE before providing assistance. 
  • Demonstrate safe patient positioning and bed adjustment techniques. 
  • Assist with proper bedpan placement and removal. 
  • Apply proper body mechanics when assisting with patient repositioning. 
  • Safely return the patient to a comfortable position and restore the environment after care.

This microcredential develops competency in toileting assistance, patient positioning, bedpan management, hygiene care, infection prevention, PPE use, communication, and safe patient handling through immersive VR-based learning. 

Patient Preparation, Privacy, and Safety −
Learn how to prepare the patient and environment while maintaining privacy, dignity, and comfort. Learners practice adjusting the bed to an appropriate working height, using PPE, explaining each step, and assisting the patient with safe positioning.
Bedpan Placement and Patient Positioning +
Engage in immersive VR scenarios to assist the patient in turning safely, position the bedpan correctly, and help the patient return to a comfortable position. Learners develop proper hand placement, body mechanics, and communication techniques throughout the process.
Bedpan Removal and Hygiene Care +
Learn proper handling and disposal of bedpan contents and contaminated materials. Learners practice securing waste bags, removing PPE, performing hand hygiene, repositioning the patient comfortably, lowering the bed, and restoring the environment after care.
Waste Disposal and Procedure Completion +
Practice positioning the patient's elbow and safely moving the forearm and hand through internal and external rotation. Learners focus on controlled movements, correct positioning, proper sequencing, and monitoring the patient for discomfort.

By completing this microcredential, learners will gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience in safely assisting patients with bedpan use. Learners will develop essential competencies in patient positioning, bedpan placement and removal, hygiene care, infection prevention, communication, safe body mechanics, waste disposal, and patient-centered care required in Nursing Assistant settings.
