Cold Pack Application and Patient Care
About the Course:
Cold Pack Application and Patient Care is a fundamental therapeutic skill performed by Clinical Medical Assistants to help reduce pain, swelling, inflammation, and tissue damage following injuries or medical procedures. In this microcredential, learners are introduced to the purpose and clinical applications of cold therapy, including when it is indicated, appropriate precautions, and patient safety considerations.
Through immersive VR simulations, learners gain hands-on experience preparing cold therapy equipment, verifying provider orders, identifying treatment sites, and correctly applying cold packs while ensuring patient comfort and safety. The course emphasizes proper patient assessment, skin protection techniques, treatment duration, and continuous monitoring for adverse reactions.
Learners will also practice documenting treatment accurately, evaluating patient response, and communicating observations to supervising healthcare providers. Throughout the course, learners reinforce infection prevention practices, professionalism, and patient-centered care essential in outpatient and clinical healthcare settings.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the purpose and therapeutic benefits of cold pack therapy.
- Understand indications, contraindications, and patient safety considerations for cold therapy.
- Demonstrate proper patient preparation and treatment site assessment.
- Apply a cold pack using correct techniques and recommended treatment protocols.
- Implement infection control and safety procedures throughout the treatment process.
- Monitor, document, and communicate patient response following cold pack application.
Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.
