About the Course:

Female Catheter Care is an essential patient care skill for Nursing Assistants responsible for supporting patients with urinary catheters. This microcredential introduces learners to the importance of proper catheter hygiene in maintaining cleanliness, preventing infection, and promoting patient comfort and dignity.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners will practice maintaining patient privacy, performing hand hygiene, using appropriate PPE, verifying patient identity, preparing water and supplies, cleaning the catheter area with soap and water, rinsing and drying the catheter, and completing the procedure safely. The procedure also includes appropriate handling of the chuck pad and cleaning the urine drainage pouch when needed.

Workforce Development

Patient positioning and hygiene during bedpan care

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare Nursing Assistants with essential skills required to provide safe and hygienic catheter care. This microcredential develops competency in patient preparation, infection prevention, catheter hygiene, PPE use, communication, safe material handling, and patient-centered care through immersive VR-based learning.

Patient Preparation, Privacy, and Safety
Learn how to maintain patient privacy by securing the room and using a privacy curtain when necessary. Learners practice hand hygiene, donning gloves and a mask, verifying patient identity, explaining the procedure, and ensuring patient comfort throughout care.
Preparing Cleaning Supplies +
Practice checking the water temperature and preparing the required cleaning materials. Learners develop proper techniques for soaking, wringing, folding, and forming a washcloth mitt before applying soap.
Catheter Cleaning and Rinsing +
Engage in immersive VR scenarios to gently clean the upper and lower portions of the catheter using a soapy washcloth mitt. Learners practice using a clean side of the mitt and carefully cleaning around the catheter to support hygiene and minimize irritation. A fresh wet washcloth is then used to rinse the catheter area.
Drying and Waste Disposal +
Practice gently drying the catheter with a clean towel and safely disposing of used cleaning materials. Learners also practice removing and disposing of the chuck pad while maintaining a clean patient environment.
Drainage Pouch Care and Procedure Completion +
Learn to clean the urine drainage pouch when needed and complete the procedure by ensuring the patient is comfortable and appropriately covered. Learners reinforce patient dignity, hygiene, and safe care practices through the final steps of the procedure.

By completing this microcredential, learners will gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience in providing female catheter care safely and hygienically. Learners will develop essential competencies in patient preparation, privacy, PPE use, catheter cleaning, rinsing, drying, waste disposal, drainage pouch care, infection prevention, and patient comfort required in Nursing Assistant and allied health settings.
