About the Course:

This Powered Surgical Instruments (PSI) microcredential introduces CST learners to the critical processes involved in the handling, cleaning, testing, and maintenance of powered surgical devices. Through immersive VR simulations, learners will safely explore PSI components, understand manufacturer-specific guidelines, and perform proper disassembly, lubrication, and functionality checks. The course emphasizes safe handling practices, battery/cable management, and adherence to infection prevention standards to ensure readiness for Sterile Processing Technician Training Program and surgical use.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the role, function, and importance of powered surgical instruments in the operating room.
  • Identify the components, accessories, and power sources for common PSI devices.
  • Differentiate between pneumatic, electric, and battery-operated instruments.
  • Perform proper cleaning, disassembly, lubrication, and inspection steps using VR-based simulations.
  • Apply safety standards for handling, transporting, and processing PSI.
  • Recognize common performance issues and troubleshoot basic PSI concerns before sterilization.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.
